It's taken me 3.5yrs since joining MSE to face my debt prob how long did it take you?

I've been around on MSE for a goodly while mostly on the Arms and occasionally dipping into Old Style too but have only now decided to face up to my debt probs :o

So wondered how long it took other DFW peeps? :D

I can't remember ever not facing my debts. I've always been aware of them and have always made the minimum payments. Having said that, I was also frustrated that they never seemed to be reducing!

Having joined MSE I now realise why!

For me, it wasn't about tackling my debts at first, I was already doing that (in a fashion), it was about retraining my spending as I was quite heavily dependant on my credit card. It's taken about 2 years to wean myself off my credit cards completely and it's only been recently that I've actually been able to even start putting a dent into my debts.

The most valuable thing I have gained from this site is learning to budget and save (I mean put money aside for annual bills like car tax/insurance/breakdown which was my main expenditure on my credit cards).

It was immediately for me as that is how I found the site. I always knew we were in debt but never realised quite how much! If I had found the site for another reason it may have taken a lot longer! xxx

I think I'd say 'immediately' as I joined the other way round.

I'd been signed up for the MSE e-mail for quite a while and had made use of the odd voucher or two, but had rarely visited the forums or other areas of info.

I'd had my lightbulb moment at the beginning of 2008 and did visit MSE for some info at around the time I started on my DMP with the CCCS. A few months after my DMP started, I decided to join the forum.

So the two sort of coincided!

Wish I'd found it a little sooner to help with those first couple of months of my DMP when creditors are a bit of a pain, just for a little bit of support.

It took me about 6 months to stop 'playing at it' and really tackle my debts :o Still a long way to go but so far I am proud that I have stopped increasing my debt and started to actually reduce it :)

Same here... I joined after my DMP, and wish it had been the other way around. I'm pretty sure that if I had found this site before I entered my DMP I could have managed things much better and more probably than not, avoided defaulting on accounts. Still, am glad I found this site eventually.... better late than never!! :money:
