morag/aless/anyone who thought 'recipes' should contain all shirley's recipes, all kitty's and all our enticing shirley in recipes (approximately 100-150 in total). I like your idea, but as with everything with a website, it creates other quandries we must work round.:)
Please can you have a think about the following quandry:
there would be 2/3 very similar but not identical versions of the same recipe, which would be confusing?
ie if you went for the first time to a website for recipes and their index looked like this, would it not be a bit strange:
breakfast pancakes
breakfast pancakes (2)
breakfast pancakes (3)
to me, that seems as though we made it, thought it was a bit rubbish, so had another go! Which isn't what we're saying!
Also how does the user know which of them to pick?

(long contents pages have been shown to create an immediate 'bounce' away from the page. Caused by option paralysis.)

Don't know if this would work, but how about having the basic recipe and then at the bottom of the page just add the "variations".
Many cookbooks do this.

I agree with this. I have a muffin recipe book that claims to have 900 recipes but really there are a lot fewer and many varieties of each. So you could have the basic recipe and then within it you could have a sub section below with any options/variations. They are also arranged by theme, could you do the same? Having a separate page sounds like hard work but even grouping the recipes under headings like breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks might make it seem less overwhelmingGod is good, all the time

but yes I think I'm with you both, just thinking about the technicalities!
What about there being such a huge index, what would people be thinking about that?
Have a look at some other recipe websites if you like for inspiration

I know I am totally against the flow on this one, which is why I kept quiet about it since people made it clear that they do not feel the same - but I really do feel it's got to be "Planner Recipes" (with separate links for planner 1 and planner 2) and "Other recipes".
I do fully understand what people are saying when they say it has to all be one list of recipes - but I feel that this then loses track of the very important aspect of the website - that it is so much more than just a recipe website; that it's a plan and a shopping list and nutrition all worked out, and zero wastage, and all on £100 a month.
Yes, other websites would all have an index of all the recipes they contain - but other websites are just recipe websites. This has to, by definition, be different, because no one has ever done anything like this before.
As I said already, I know I view things a bit differently to other people, so the majority view has to win (and that's rarely mine, lol) - but the concept, and the execution, of this website, has come from someone viewing things a bit differently to most people - if things are never viewed from a previously unexplored vantage point, then status quo will never change.... And I'll shut up about it now, I promise - I just had to get it off my chestNow it can all be turned over to more sensible, more normal people.
Oh, and in case anyone was really worried about Amy and the Tardis, I've just read that Karen Gillan is filiming the Christmas special and the next series, so I guess we should all be looking forward to a hat full of rabbits next week ! Sorry, I had to get that off my chest, too.0 -
DD made the bread & doughnuts today - Anyway, if an 11-year old child can follow the recipe I don’t think you need to worry too much about Shirl.
I feel a bit of a pleb having to ask this if an 11year old can work it outbut anyway, does anyone know exactly how much yeast I would need to make just one loaf? and do you need a damp tea towel or anything to cover bread when it's proving? I have the bread flour, I have the yeast, but I don't have the mental agility to understand the comment of: "always use at least 10g yeast even if you reduce all the other quantities".
If I'm quartering the recipe, will the bread not be overly yeasty, given that were I to make the full recipe it would work out at 3.75g of yeast each loaf?
Sorry to be dense - it's been a tough couple of weeksand I really would like to have a go at the bread.

Not a stupid question at all. Because yeast is "alive" you need a certain amount of it to kick it off. I would say 2 tsp for one loaf would be fine. Depending on the type of yeast you either mix it with the water and let it foam up or stir it in with the flour. You wont taste it at that amount, HTHGod is good, all the time
