You can block numbers in truecall, its very easy to setup. I have it connected to base of my dect phone, then block numbers I had problems with, any other numbers besides family and friends on my * list and then asked who they are before I even give them a chance to speak to me, if I dont like what they say in the message I refuse the call
  • New to this so apologies if not followed correct procedure.
In reply to harrypeps, we are suffering the same problem. We were a new BT customer a year ago & eversince we have been receiving daily calls for someone called Wrighton? We have worked out that this use to be their number, the people who call want to speak to them, we have explained we are not them, have never been them and if they owe them money we are not interested! We have never received any post for these people but this is so annoying, they have been rude to both myself & my husband and its got to the point where we just tell them to "go away" & put the phone down. We cannot get any further than the surname of the person they want to speak to, who ever calls will not give us their details even though these sound like business calls and every one is a withheld number!Grrr

Welcome to the MSE forums lyndylou1.

Try BT's Nuisance Calls Bureau (0800 661 441) initially. They will probably suggest their Choose To Refuse service and may offer a month's trial free.

If that doesn't work, you're going to have to ask for a change of number (but that is sometimes no cure and can be awkward for you).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    or
    contact these people
    tps@dma.org.uk

and ask them to de-register your number from this (useless) list. You don't have to give a reason.
    http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/what/
    TPS (residential)
    WHO CAN REGISTER?
The term individual includes consumers at their residential address, sole traders and, except in Scotland, partnerships.

When you have been de-registered you can register your number on this (far better) list.
    http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/ctps/what/
    CTPS
    Who can register?
A corporate subscriber includes corporate bodies such as a limited company in the UK, a limited liability partnership in England, Wales and Northern Ireland or any partnership in Scotland. It also includes schools, government departments and agencies, hospitals, PLC's and other public bodies.

My number belongs to Dr and is NHS

I do not receive any marketing/nuisance calls

'marketing' companies are not going to waste time and money phoning numbers where there is absolutely no chance of a sale and may result in serious complaints.
  • Hi guys,
For those who are pretty sure the calls are nuisance calls, I can empathise.
It seems I have someone who is determined to cause myself and my loved ones as much aggoravation and upset as possible.
However, I wont bore you with that side of it, my post is to do with witheld numbers to a BT phone.
As someone stated above, BT's nuisance calls department are your first port of call (pardon the pun) depending on the seriousness or the frequency of the calls, can I suggest you start keeping a 'log of evidence'? Dates, times, what happened etc.
Once you have a fair amount of evidence and you would like the police to help, go down to your local P Station (don't dial 999) and make a formal complaint, giving them your evidence and your reasons for wanting them involved. They and only they can find out who the witheld numbers are coming from. Inform them that you will be contacting the BT's Nuisance Calls Dept to ask them to put a 28 days trace on your line. This is free.
    Now for the horrible bit...
In order for BT to trace the calls adequately you will need to answer the witheld calls, so that BT can separate company calls and personal ones.
Once all that is done, BT can pass over their evidence to police, who can do more to help. If you are pretty sure you know who is responsible, it might be worth mentioning this to the police when you first talk to them and give your reasons why.
    Best of Luck!!

Registered with TPS here and for the past week have received about 15 calls from silent calls, unknown numbers, sales type things. Yesterday I told them that I was registered with TPS and today they called to say there WERE TPS and they could stop ALL unwanted calls for the next 5 years. But of course there was a charge of just £1 a month and a £20 one off fee!

They were insistent they were the TPS and couldn't answer my queries as to how they couldn't stop the calls anyway.

When I said I wanted to register on line so I could read the full terms and conditions they directed me to a call stop dot com website which is clearly spam!

I've phoned TPS who told me to phone BT who told me to put the phone down so they'd move on to someone else!

Grrrr, that's a lot of help, isn't it?
Do not allow the risk of failure to stop you trying!
  • Hi peeps, not sure why somebody's not said to contact your telco and ask them to block all unidentified numbers. Easy really. That's what I did.
All calls have the CLID active unless they've been disabled.

    I've been Money Tipped!
You think thats bad enough I never have my phone line on unless I need to use it since I get "perverts" on the line often pleasuring themselves as it appears my phone number before it was given to me used to be a local "sauna" and escort service number so I get loads of voicemails asking if they can have a girl sent round to their address or what time does the sauna open and BT wont change my number as I owe them money, when I owe them money due to constant admin errors from BT!
