The best thing to do is listen to your vet. My dog had this a few years ago and she did get over it she was much younger than your girl though,Its a big op for a old dog to get over.PDSa may be able to help with bill but only you and your vet can decide whats best for your dog.Good luck with whatever you decide.

I agree with AnglicanPat - it is the downside of having a much-loved dog who has been your companion for so many years - but at the end of the day, the most loving thing a heartbroken owner can do is give release to suffering - better a day too early than a day too late.

She will let you know when she has had enough.

I think it will be best to let her enjoy her last days here at home,in the warm, instead of a operation room, table or whatever.16 years is very good innings,my vet did say that the operation would be difficult and maybe result in the same ending as letting her stay at home, what we got of think of at a time like this is how much longer can the animal live for ?,AP thanks very much for your post and all others. All i can say is il say goodbye, have a cry and remember the last 16 years.

Leedash, I am a vet, and I have to say that I don't think I would put a 16 year old dog of my own through surgery for pyometra, for all the reasons others have said. However, please bear in mind that with pyometra, the womb fills up with pus which then leaks toxins into the bloodstream, so usually as the condition progresses, the affected dog will feel more and more ill - like someone with a massive hangover - often vomiting as a result of the poisons in the system. Someone else said that pyometras can be open (when pus is leaking out of the rear end) or closed (when the pus is all trapped inside the womb and not leaking out) - if a dog has a closed pyo, there is also a risk of the inflammed and infected uterus actually bursting, and the animal deteriorating very rapidly as a result. I understand you probably need some time to say goodbye to your dog and come to terms with the situation, but please bear in mind that she might deteriorate to the point where she is really suffering, and it may well be kinder to let the vet put her to sleep than to leave her until the effects of the infection are so bad that she goes naturally. It's the last kindness you can do her if things get worse, in my opinion. I'm so sorry for what has happened.

Echo all that has been said.

I'm sorry you had to make what is probably the right decision, but nevertheless a painful one.
