Yes (though it's not a disease) and yes :).

Yes. Our Stella caught it last year.

It is prevelant in females that haven't had a season, and neccessitates the removal of the womb. If not caught and treated, the result can be fatal. If your dog has it, and you love your dog, then do yourself a favour and get it seen to NOW.

Madam is now a picture of health, and we are pleased she was insured as the vets bill was over £800, but she is worth every penny. :)
That's my mutt in the picture above.

Firstly, it can't be 'caught' as it's not contagious and it is no more likely/unlikely in b1tches that have had a season compared with those that haen't - all unspayed females are at the same risk of it.

It is a serious infection of the uterus. Pyometra can either be 'open' or 'closed'. The closed type is generally the most serious but both are life-threatening if not treated quickly. Generally, it necessitates the b1tch to be spayed immediately but I have heard of cases that have been successfully treated with antibiotics. However, they are the exception. Certainly, if it were my dog, I wouldn't take the chance with conserative treatment and I'd want her to be spayed.

Never had a dog with it thankfully (can't see why you don't believe it to be a disease frugalista?) - but I think it is a compelling reason for speying b1tches, as it is an infection of the uterus occuring in entire females. It progresses quickly, and can be fatal if not treat quickly - do you have a dog who you suspect to have it, or who has been diagnosed OP?

whilst I agree with the remainder of your post... I believe it is most common in middle aged b1tches, though it can happen at all ages.

It is a big and considerable operation, I am all over the place emotionally at the minute LOL so not going to advise further, but it is a VERY significant op to put a 16 year old through.
    Hugs x

Personally (and I really am an emotional mess of global proportions) even if I had the money I would have to think about whether I would put her through it at 16.
