What about this one :
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-TX-P42X10B-42-inch-Widescreen-Freeview/dp/B001TIMQDQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1270412745&sr=8-3
I have bought the little brother, same but 37", for £440 before Christmas, but for some reason it has shot up to £563 now.I am very happy with it, and the colours are more naturals than LCDs. The picture is superb and plasmas are good for gaming.
By the way, why not plasma?0 -
Dont plasma's suffer from burn in (think thats what its called) and use more power?0
-
You just need to be careful for the first 200 hrs, not to leave channel logos or still pictures for to long, but I think there was a big problem with burn in with the previous generations of plasma but, following infos from different websites, it doesn't seem to be a big problem now.
What I do like with plasma is that it has a glass front, and you don't loose clarity of picture if you look at it sideway, something you can get with LCDs.
As for using more power, I think they use a bit more power.

All what I know is that my bills are not that much more expensive than before I had the plasma TV.0 -

Both have good reviews, and they are full HD, if you intend to go blu ray in the future.0 -

That's the 530 which - iirc - didn't get the same excellent ratings as the 550 posted by Spark above your post.
To the OP, the Samsung LE37B550 is top rated on just about every AV site and the price is in your bracket. I actually bought one a month ago from Amazon and the picture is excellent on blu-ray (less so on normal telly, but that's to do with the signal and not the telly itself).
One thing I will warn you of with the Samsung LE37B550 is that sound is absolutely !!!!!! and no amount of messing with the telly sound settings will make it any better. There's no mid-range at all - it's all tinny and boomy. You'll need to hook up some external speakers or use a surround system etc to get the best from it.
Amazon has currently got them on for £503 incl delivery.0 -
What about the TV's they offer occasionally in Lidl and Aldi? I bought a CRT one 4 years ago and it's been fine. It did break down once but the standard free 3 year warrantee worked fine with no quibble...NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0

~ scalers certainly come into play here so the tv definitely makes a difference

For the sound quality of this TV, the reviewers seems to have different opinions. Some find it !!!!!!, some find it adequate but no more, and others seems to have been happily surprised, probably after setting the TV up to Trusurround.
I think it depends on what you are used to and your expectations.
It might be alright for the OP, but it would have helped if the OP had said what the TV would be mainly used for.
Then again, when your finances are limited, you need to compromise.
Better have a good picture and bad sound, as the sound can be improved with external speakers.0
