Which matress?
Memory foam/tempur or pocket sprung?
Spent a LOT of money 20 years ago on expensive pocket sprung- far more than we coud afford and it has been wonderful but many recommend tempur these days. Howver it seems to be a marmite product
Would like to make wise choice seeing as its likely to be hefty investment. Husband has early onset arthritis so need to make right choice
Any advice?0 -

Tempur are actually over rated and very over priced (they actually came out bottom in the Which Magazine report on memory foam mattresses). You can get far better for a fraction of the price.
The best type of mattress for support is pocket sprung with memory foam (or latex foam). Make sure it has 2" to 2.5" of memory foam with a density of between 60 and 70kg per m3. If you can find them go for a two sided one so that you can tunr it and it will last far longer/
If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.0 -
Tim you're giving some great recommendations in this thread, ty!
I've finally got a bed and just need a mattress now. It's a slatted thingy so was advised to stay away from the spring type mattress in case it gets messed up and uneven, but I'm a bit unsure of a memory foam one - I've heard they can get quite hot and I'm a bit sceptical about how comfy they'd be for sex :P I've heard the mixture of pocket sprung and memory foam is the best overall option, but to me that also means having the absolute worst of both worlds! /o\
I also occasionally suffer from a bit of a bad back if I've been doing any lifting or exercise, nothing too bad at all, but still there nonetheless. I was recommended SilentNight for the slatted thing, but reading around, the Madrid seems like it could be a winner?
Anything in particular you guys would recommend please?0 -

Foam only mattresses can be very hot. However those that contain open coil springs, or full size steel pocket springs give better ventilation, and allow the heat to dissipate from the memory foam. Just make sure the memory foam is 2" to 2.5" deep.
Open coil springs are fine with slatted bases.
With pocket sprung only, or non turn pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses you would need to lay a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slats to spread the weight out.
Two sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses would be fine with gaps between the slats of up to 3", as the memory foam on the bottom will spread the weight out.
So two sided pocket sprung with memory foam (or latex foam) is actually the best of both worlds.
Believe me, memory foam with springs doesn't cause any problems as far as other bed time activities go, as long as the memory foam isn't too deep.0 -
Tim, god you're quick! Fair play
Thank you so, so much for the reply. Think I've decided on the Madrid then! \o/ Going to order as soon as the new carpets are down ;p0
