King Size Mattress

I got an Argos king size bed about 5 years ago, and the mattress is finally going home (sagging on hubbie's side). The bed frame is like this one:

I think it was a pocket sprung orthopedic mattress. We like medium to firm mattresses - can anyone recommend a replacement?

If it is a slatted bed then that would explain why a pocket sprung mattress hasn't lasted very long.
With pocket springs they all work independently which means that with gaps of over 1" between the slats they will try and push down into the gaps, and this can damage the mattress.
You can get around this problem by laying a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slats to spread the weight out.
If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.0 -

Thanks for that tip, Tim! Shame we didn't think of it ourselves earlier! The choice online is a bit overwhelming. The combination of pocketsprung and memory foam looks interesting - we're looking in the £200 - £300 price range for a kingsize mattress of this type, do you think that's sensible?0 -
Has anyone ever tried this?

Actually I can't find a reference to the number of springs on that one, so it's likely to be too low. Argh this is taking forever! I'm now going to look for a pocket spring bed (at least 1000) with latex foam covering it. Is quilted or tufted best I wonder? Oh too many choices!0 -

For that budget You would be better off looking at pocket sprung only. You wouldn't get a good quality pocket sprung and memory foam mattress for that price.0 -

That mattress looks like it contains reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs. They don't give as good support as full size steel springs, and they don't allow air to circulate around the spring layer to dissipate the heat. Also it would be worth finding out the density of the memory foam.
The optimum depth of the memory foam is 2", and density is 60 to 70kg per m3.
Personally I would go for pocket sprung only rather than this one.0 -

Latex is more expensive than memory foam. So do get a mattress with a full 2" deep layer, it would be way over your budget.0 -
Hi
Im after some advice regarding kingsize mattress. I dont know anything about mattresses however my current mattress although only 3.5 years old is giving us some pain (the mattress actually came with the bed so didnt expect it to last very long). I went to a local bedding centre and after trying out a few we decided that the "Sweet Dreams Ultra Health Mattress" was the most comfortable @£360. However after reading some of the posts I noticed that you would not recommend a pocket sprung matress if the bedframe was slatted - which our bed is (also has slight curves on the slats) and it has a 70mm memory foam top. Dont really like the feel of the "full unit" sprung mattress where the salesman said the wire is in one or something like that as seems like bed moves too much.
Could you have a look and give me some feedback/advice on this please?0 -

If you have a slatted frame then you can lay pegboard or hardboard over the slats to spread the weight out.
The Ultra Health mattress has a slightly high spring count (I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800), and the density of the memory foam is low. So personally for that price i would go for pocket sprung only.
I'm not sure what you mean by "full unit".0 -
Thanks Tim
The salesman described other mattresses as one continuous wire from bottom to top (may be open coil but not exactly sure) which again dont really like feel. Do you think the foam top on the ultra health is too thick also? And due to the slats being curved would this not affect the way the mattress lies on them if I were to install hardwood/pegwood?
You also mentioned the density of the foam what would you say should be the minimum/average density?
Again thank you for your time0
