Brilliant post.........Many Thanks
glad i could be of help:D0 -
would suggest changing diaphragm washer, if the washer has gone slack this could cause the plunger to vibrate. once you have it stripped down hold a cup turned upside down over the valve body ( not actually touching the valve body) and have someone turn the water supply back on very slowly for a couple of seconds, this will make sure there is no debris behind the diaphragm washer.
before refitting, make sure all parts are clean and scale free.
check that the steady pin on the valve stem is tight against the cistern wall, and the lock nut is tight. also check the lever arm connection nut is tight.
you could also turn the bridge piece outlet to a different position.
hope this helps, good luck.
Thanks, will try that otherwise I will just replace the whole valve - it doesn't look like they are too expensive and hopefully fairly straight forward for me to replace myself. Are the diaphragm's a standard size?0 -

yes, diaphragm washer is standard. can pick them up anyware. bandq, wickes etc, cheaper at plumbers merchants. cost about a pound.
when replacing the washer be careful to fit right way round, check how the old one comes off.
concerning replacement of grub screw to push button, cut a new slot across the head of the grub screw with a junior hacksaw to make a clean slot for a flat headed screwdriver, dip the thread of the grub screw in a drop of washing up liquid, be carefull not to overtighten as they are easy to crossthread.0 -

Thanks for the advice, changed the diaphragm and the noise has finally stopped :T I think the hole in the plastic tube must have been a red herring.
Can't believe I have put up with the noise for about 6 months when it was so simple to fix in the end. You have probably saved me a fortune by fixing it myself :beer:0 -
the hole is there for anti syphon reasons.
in some local water authority areas, the tube silencer is actually outlawed.Get some gorm.0 -
so thanks to this thread i have managed to get the cistern top off! so now all i need help with is getting the toilet to flush more powerfully. (it tends not to clear away the toilet paper when flushed)
has anyone any ideas on how i can do this?
(thanks in advance!)0
