I have to change my doctor - thinking about it I need to change my surgery. The only time they have dealt promptly with a health problem I had was when I was really going to die - the ec-topic pregnancy. Apart from this - totally useless.

Today I finally managed to see my doctor about my leg (which is better and I managed a very short run yesterday). Message is: yes you have cloths but they are superficial; yes a cloth can break off but can't get any where important throught these veins; no point seeing a surgeon - the cuts mean that they won;t be bothered to deal with varicose veins; you can do it privately but they will probably get back.

!!!!!! am I supposed to do? Sit here in pain, with totally unsightly leg and wait to crock it? No way!

    Think, think, think....

  • That is the spirit Firewalker. Is there any chance you can make an appointment with your university dr and ask for a recommendation of a good local surgery? I think it is a lottery sometimes but they will have experience of students all over the area and which surgeries specialise in particular issues and also how speedy they are at solving and treating them.

Do you know anyone in the medical faculty they will know too as they should have trained most of them.

FW - Are there other doctors at the same surgery, it could be good to try another one there for a start. I think most surgeries have ones that aren't so good, or have their attitudes to certain treatments etc..

Also go with a list, at least in your head of what you want to ask, and what you want doing and why. It might be 'minor' to the doctor but the effect on your lifestyle isn't. Have you got any private health insurance scheme in place, if so look out the paperwork, and find out what you need from the doctor to access it.

Personally I'd want at least a blood test to check that nothing was causing the clots, but I'm not a medic at all. But a check on clotting/cholesterol could at least help put your mind at rest a little.

On children reading, my 2 used to love snuggling up, one on each side and we'd read books together, talking through the pictures and taking it in turns to read bits. When they went bed at night, they had a quiet time to settle, and we used to get books with story tapes, so that they could 'read' the books independently.

To get them into literature etc., in the car on long journeys a family favourite was the BBC radio dramatisations of The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings. It definitely got them so that they couldn't wait to read them when older. We used to raid the library regularly for other story tapes too.

Boys tend to like non-fiction more than girls. Also just like adults they'll like some authors and types of books more than others. So find something they like, and then get more of it :) At the toddler age for boys, normally dinosaurs, big machines, space ships, sharks, reptiles and creepy crawlies work quite well. Roald Dahl Revolting Rhymes is normally good to read to them, they love cringing but maybe better when a little older. 'The very hungry caterpillar' would be just the right age, as would 'Six Dinner Sid' for 3 year olds.

Toddlers normally like action rhymes, too, so the books & CD by Sarah Williams & Ian Beck which had the rhymes and show how to do the actions work quite well, and you can learn them together. The first one is called 'Round & round the garden' it's a bit better than the second one, Oranges and Lemons.
  • Talking about children reading does anybody have any children's stories on cassette tape we have found a children's cassette player when we were decluttering but only the tape that was in it which fortunately was Beatrix Potter which they love but would be nice to have some others. I did look in the car boot but sadly nothing.

DT - charity shops are another place to look. Also try the local library. Also if you go to Amazon, click on books, then audio books, then cassetes, you can then select children's books, and filter by age too. There are lots on ebay too.

DT, I *think* I've got Roald Dahl's Matilda on tape somewhere, I'll have a look today and if I can dig it out you're more than welcome to it :) Will see if I've got anything else too :) Came from a charity shop for about 40p I think - they're great places to look

Good luck with the doctor Firewalker, you're evidently not happy with this one!

How are the books going to be picked?

It's just with it being on mse, maybe not picking the latest bestsellers at premium prices would be good. The slightly older ones are very cheap on amazon and ebay, plus are more likely to be in libraries etc and carboots. Also if we use old copies we're reducing out global footprint relative to buying new.

I would like to join in, but with travelling would need to organise a kindle or similar, with kindles classics out of copyright are supposedly downloadable for free. But not sure if I can download when abroad, so not sure if I should get one or not. Don't want to buy one and not use it.

Good point. We need to do it in an MSE way. It would be fab if they were books we could borrow from the library. Maybe people can take it in turns to recommend their favourite (regardless of age etc) book and we all read it and discuss it?
