Now books! I was right - we have all read more than the six books that the BBC think we have read. And there are cultural differences, I believe. I have not read some of the books people studied as school here but: I have read War and Piece in Russian, I like Dostoyevski (Crime and Punishment is a bit of a heavy going compared to the Roulett Player but...); I studied Germinal at school and Madame Bovary, and The Inferno, of course (Madame Bovary I dislike with passion although Flaubert is generally OK). Marques I discovered by accident (my sister could not stand Hundred Years of Solitude so she passed it on to me when I was forteen) he has been one of my favourites ever since.

There is no difference in the new books (the once that were not written by people who are already dead). Although, after the last list I did read His Dark Materials - which is very good and well worth reading.

The books on this list are the most popular books in Britain - which does not make the necessarily the best books written. But if there are takers, we can set up a reading club and start getting through them. We can take turns to chose the book and than have a time when we discuss it - does not have to be profound or anything; just something to talk about.

An important question is: shall we do it here or shall we do it on the Matrix Forum? Anyone who would like to play but is still not member of the Matrix - you can always join.

I think you are definitely right about the cultural thing, and possibly an age thing in this country too. I don't know how old a lot of people are, but know I'm the same age as DT, and we have a lot of 'read' books in common and I know a lot of them were books we read at school. In junior school we used to each read a paragraph out loud, going round the class; we got through a fair few that way.

Firewalker, I am not a member of the Matrix ( i had a look but was a bit confused - you know me it doesn't take much) but count me in for the reading club. I am starting to relax and get my life back and can think of nothing better than to get back into reading again.

A lot of the books I have read, were read through personal choice/curiosity. We didn't read much of those on the list at school.

Sorry to ask, but can anyone explain the matrix please? Or should I ask on that thread? I did try reading through the posts, but still struggled to understand how it works.
