    And the saga continued…

    After my conversation with the receptionist I put my leg up and waited (while doing some work). Finally, the phone rang and it was my doctor; I described what is happening and of course I heard: ‘You have superficial phlebitis. What you need for it is penicillin and anti-inflammatory gel.’ Wait a minute? I am too young to have this (my mum had it but it started when she was about 60) and I am a long distance runner; I refuse to spend my life on my bum, with my feet up – there are many marathons to run; there is life to live. So: ‘Is it safe to walk with this?’ – I ask. ‘Yes.’; ‘Is it safe to run with this, apart from the pain, of course?’; ‘Yes.’ – he says.

    Off I to Boots I go. Hand my prescription at the counter and something made me ask the pharmacist what else one can do for phlebitis.
    ‘You don’t have phlebitis’ – he says.
    ‘Yes I do; my doctor just said so.’
    ‘But why is he prescribing antibiotics for phlebitis? Or ibuprofen gel? This doesn’t help. Have you seen your doctor?’
    ‘No but I spoke to him on the phone.’
    ‘I want to see.’

    I get taken into a little room – a ‘treatment room’ it says – and mortified show my leg. It is not very pretty at the moment; there is the swollen knotty vein, there is the reddish bit, and there is the fact that I have not waxed for some time. And this is the day when a nice man decides to ask to look at my leg. Anyway, mortification aside he nods and announces:

    ‘Yep, you don’t need antibiotics; you need something that will dissolve the clots.’

    So I ended up with the name of a cream to rub in and the knowledge that there are clots in my vein. Now I have heard about all that and these can break free and travel. Bad news is I could die; good news is I am insured and OH can sue the surgery out of existence. This does not make health care more reliable or my leg less painful.

    Much work was done, much was accomplished. Takes my mind off silliness.

    Stay cool, people. I’ll check in tomorrow evening – teaching all day; but my doctor said it is safe.

    FW - While it may be fine to run etc with Phlebitis, I would check again about blood clots. Not wanting to seem alarmist, but I would imagine that the idea is that they should dissolve and NOT break off and float round your system.

    Floating blood clots are not good :( as I'm sure you are well aware of. Do you really need to teach all day tomorrow? look after yourself and confine yourself to barracks - all students will cope at short notice (urgent email to Doc's required and get to the NHS walk in near the airport PRONTO)

    Did you go to see your Doctor in the end FW? If not, I think you definitely should. I'm sure the pharmacist knows his stuff, but he is not your Doctor. Please get it checked.

    As for mortification, my friend had to go and see about having her varicose vein done and was standing in her underwear waiting to be examined when in walked the Doctor. He was the father of a boy in her son's football team - she was horrified - especially as he was examining her leg from top to bottom!!! She said she will never be able to look him in the face again.

    Please go to the Doctor tomorrow, don't let them fob you off.
    Take care.

    EDIT: crossed posts with Northernlas - but agree with the above. Not to be alarmist, but better to rule it out.

    ok, I have read about the Matrix, and read some of the posts, but not sure i fully understand it. How does it work Firewalker?

    Hi Aureol212,

    you asked about the Matrix. In brief it is a group (consisting mainly of women who met around Memorygirl's tread) briadly believing that:

    · Everyone is a hero and no-one is a victim;
    · Co-operation is more potent than competition;
    · Abundance and prosperity should be used to support others on their path to success;
    · Balanced life is the road to happiness;
    · Holistic support is a necessary condition for success.

    All member commit to spend 15 minutes per day to support the other members if support is asked for. The support is mainly with shaping ideas, personal growth and starting enterpirses. But could be pretty much anything, really.

    And this is it, I think.

  • Firewalker flippin heck. It is late i just saw the last few posts and I am getting scared. Will this condition go? you must hug OH and do happy things. Use the insurance to see some Bupa people they can sort out quick treatment. I am a socialist but you are MSE as far as i am concerned and it would be good if you had a speedy recovery, I will pray for you too.

    Good morning! Just to say that I'll be fine - yesterday I spoke to my doctor and although the antibiotics were an overkill it turns out he is right about moving. My trainer confirmed that moving around, exercising and being active, in fact makes the whole leg thing better. And the cream seems to be working.

    Do they know why it happened FW? Is there anything you can do to stop it happening again? Especially with long haul flights etc. and long drives it might be worth asking for tests to check things out to see if there's anything you can do.

    Pleased to hear it seems to be working.

    Good news here on the exercise front, I actually managed to get out for a 30 minute brisk walk without gasping for breath, and did some toning exercises too. The weather is good at the moment, so will try a longer walk today, then hopefully next week maybe restart the beginners running schedule. It's nearly a month since I last managed to do anything. But shouldn't rest on the negatives, the sun is shining and I'm starting to feel healthier :)

    Right, people, I had an interesting day. Teaching was ace – and I did manage to do it because I do a Socratic act. In other words the students prepare presentations about different theories and I ask questions and lead the discussion – we are talking about PhD students and teaching them about more than philosophy. The difference today was that I had my right leg up on a chair.
    Tonight I am going out with two friends – we are going out for our birthdays (June and October) but have this arrangement where if we manage to celebrate during the calendar year we have done well. This time we are cutting it very fine.

    Also, I finally managed to get around to completing the second exercise I set – and I did find it very hard. However, here it comes:

    1) What are the five things that make you feel alive? (debating, solving problems, learning new things, reading about finance and making money, looking at my son when he is asleep, running)
    2) What are the five things that give you satisfaction above all else? (helping people figure things out, writing, developing instruments and exercises, finishing things, starting things, feeling useful)
    3) What are the five things that you have defended most determinedly? (my son, my ethics code, a piece of research)
    4) What would you do if you did not have to earn a living? (read, write, travel, learn to dance flamenco, do stand-up comedy, get into public speaking)

    Please do have a look and let me know what do you think my passions are?

    And the thought for the day is:

    “What makes people weak? Their need for validation and recognition.” – Paolo Coelho

    Hello FW, I hope that your leg is much better today and that you are looking after yourself. I have been thinking about your questions and below are my answers. I even asked others to contribute their thoughts for me.
    1) Write down five things that we have always found easy;
    chatting with people about anything and nothing (keeping a conversation flowing)
    being positive and finding the positive in challenging situations
    finding information to support an idea
    turning my everyday experiences into silly stories to entertain people
    being organised

    2) Write down the things that we can do forgetting about time;
    reading/writing
    listening to music
    chatting
    people watching
    surfing the internet

    3) Write down the things we have been told we are good at. I actually asked some of my friends and work colleagues to answer this. This is what came back from several people.
    getting organised
    problem solving
    motivating others
    listening to people
    planning and implementing processess
    aromatherapy massages (trained but never do it very often)
    being positive

    1) What are the five things that make you feel alive?
    walking in the country
    spending time with my family and friends
    walking along the beach/sitting on the beach/listening to the waves
    being out at sea and watching whales and dolphins
    dancing
    writing and scribbling down my thoughts and anything else that flows

    2) What are the five things that give you satisfaction above all else?
    seeing somebody "get it" when I am teaching them something.
    making somebody laugh or smile
    finishing a project within a deadline
    having a story published
    A clean house

    3) What are the five things that you have defended most determinedly?
    My family
    The right to voice my opinion
    Animals -when coming across people doing them wrong
    My friendship with a certain person when told that I cannot be friends with them
    My freedom and independance

    4) What would you do if you did not have to earn a living?
    write a childrens novel
    stand up comedy/after dinner speaking/acting/some form of entertainment
    spend the days at the beach or out at sea watching whales
    make cakes
    Read

    Not really sure what all of that says about me.

I envy the fact you are all able to self analyse i am not brave enough to do that. But it is lovely to see. What a great group of people. Better go marking to do. Yuk.
