"I want a professorship and I want intellectual hegemony" - What on earth does that mean? I looked up the word hegemony, but I am none the wiser really as to what it means in relation to you. This is obviously something very important to you, but can you help me understand it please? Do you really want to rule the world!
Sorry if I sound like an imbecile, but I do not understand what you are saying. Am I the only one?

Please pass on my congratulations to LB for his brilliant results - a chip off the old block then? I hope he will have a lovely treat from his obviously very proud mummy!

    Hi

I was reading about your plans for the sabbatical, and agreed with others that there seemed to be a lot of work involved. But now you've explained about wanting the professorship it makes sense that you use this time to build towards that, away from the day to day university life.

I often read this thread as a daily digest on my phone, and had wondered over that word when I read it this morning. I thought it was something to do with having influence over others, but I've only ever heard it used in terms of dictatorships, so puzzled about it in terms of an academic role too.

Hope it works out for you.

When I did a quick google all reference to the word hegemony seemed to refer to dictatorships etc, which is why I was confused! ( Doesn't take much mind!!) Will need to get out my dictionary and have a proper look when I have some time.

Hi guys, the answer is no - in this case it is not about a 'dictatorship' as such. But it is about establishing wide intellectual influence (through developing a theory that is useful to others and allows them to see the 'social' world differently).

Probably the whole thing will be clearer if I put it like that: professorship is an organisational title; 'intellectual hegemony' reflects the way in which one's knowledge community regrads them. These are the members who are often at the centre (they are highly cited, highly invited, shape developments in research fields and, when American, monetise intellectula success by writing best sellers).

  • Professor Firewalker - now that will be a seriously cool title :D. Well done to both you and LB.... and well done to oh for taking on the cc companies.

I shall now go and think about hegemony and world domination whilst painting my shelves - multi-tasking, keeps both the mind and the body active.

This feels good! Improbable as it may be I have just sent the whole draft of the paper (probably about 27th draft) to the 'lads' - three colleagues in my group - to see anf do some tinkering about with.

    What now?

Interesting! I always said that the reason I am so good is not morals but lack of imagination. But...I am also in training and am losing weight(using a wonderful FREE iPhone application called MyFitnessPal).

    Hypno, very tempting though.
