Sometime ago you mentioned that you ran and the Garmin told you you burned 800 cals. The millage you reported and the cals did not match. We burn between 100 and 120 cals per mile.

Ah, but that all depends on what you weigh. My friend and I are both on Nutracheck and I can burn 200 more calories than her doing the same exercise because I weigh more and have more to lose (in my defense I'm also 6 inches taller ;)).
As my weight reduces, the same exercise will burn less calories -apparently :)

I just found this - had to share immediately. It is so good and probably many of us need exactly something like it to remind us...Enjoy!

    The Don’t Quit Poem

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
    When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don't give up though the pace seems slow--
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor's cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out--
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit--
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

thanks Firewalker, I read that many years ago, used to have a copy somewhere and have now lost it.
  • Hi there Firewalker, another Lurker here. I suffered from a stress-related illness, acute stress disorder, and found Dr Tim Cantopher's work really helpful. His premise is that people who suffer from these conditions tend to give too much and try to operate at 100% of their capacity, with no wiggle room, which means that when a very stressful event occurs, such as a death in the family, there is a real danger of implosion. Like a pressure cooker which has no release valve. He says it is the 'curse of the strong' and the best employees and most giving individuals are the ones that are most vulnerable.

The stress doesn't even need to be negative, just arousal, tension, alertness, excitement, enjoyment, exhileration, fear, panic or whatever but excessive over-arousal can cause major burn out and needs to be monitored carefully.

I have been working at running my life at around 60-70% of capacity, so that I have room for manoever and it is really helping, though originally hard to achieve, because it does mean cutting many non-essentials out and just focussing on the things that really matter, but it has meant that I have been a lot more efficient and productive and relaxed.

Take care and keep writing, which is supposed to have major benefits too.
  • Hey i have read his work too! Dr made me. hello and welcome.

Thanks Bluebellwood, I think that would really help my OH who has recently come out of a period of 'burn-out' due to over work and looks to be taking on too much again.

  • Thanks BBW - another one here guilty of continually working at 100% and not allowing wiggle room. Many, many straws have broken this camel's back over the years, I can tell you :o - getting a bit better as I'm getting older. What is it with high achievers and perfectionists....

Firewalker - I am so sorry, I meant to post this before and completely forgot :o - link to 10 minute mindfulness exercise that you can do with your laptop on your knee.

    Take care of you (((hugs)))
