i've been looking at the samsung monte s5620 ( for hubby) at cpw they only have it online (not instore) on o2 payg, hubby uses '3' payg , would this be unlocked like the payg phones instore would be, the girl instore didn't have a clue if they would be or not , and also has anyone bought this phone yet ? any comments/reviews on it, i can't find many reviews for it

Depends on what stock is in the warehouse but most likely it will be locked. It's not on any other network so all there stock probably came from o2.

If it was on many networks they'd probably have generic stock and sell / ship it with a approproiate sim pack , but as it's O2 only probably all packed up by o2 so most likely locked.

I've been looking for info on it recently. It looks pretty good value, the only annoyance is that for some bizarre reason it doesn't appear to have an onscreen QWERTY keyboard. There are a number of demos on youtube.

i decided to ring cpw the lady says .."hmmm lets have a look i think it will be unlocked but if you find out it's not you can take it back to a cpw store or send it back" :rotfl: you'd think someone at cpw should at least know :D

stompa i thinks its good value too i dont think the qwerty is a big deal for hubby he's just getting the knack of texting ;) , i have a nokia 5530 and never use the qwerty on mine. hubby had a look at the you tube videos still undecided i also know camera does not have a flash,

I don't know for sure, but I wouldn't count on it.

Most handsets purchased from cpw generally are unlocked already, however it's inadvisable to use a 3 sim in a non 3 branded handset as apparently 3 have a clause in their t&c which restricts the use of non 3 handsets.

Also, most phones will support apps. If you ask the sales rep to sign you up to MyHub, it's a free service that if you type in the make and model of your handset, it'll tell you which ones you can get free.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

Not quite true. (and this applies to most mobile co's not just CPW)

If a phone is availabe from CPW on 2 or more networks you'll probably get unlocked stock.

If a phone is on one network, or is exclusive to a network in some way (ie red model is on vodafone, blue is on O2) and you ask for that networks exclusive model you'll probably get network stock and this will probably be locked.

Basically if you want a standard silver Nokia ABC1234 that is on any network CPW don't stock that phone for each network, just generic stock and supply that and an apropriate sim card. If the phone is network exclusive in some way, then that stock will have come from the network and probably be locked.

The issue with 3 Sims is that if you go out of there coverage you drop down to Orange as a backup. Putting a 3 Sim in a "standard" phone may not work (they use Usims) or it may revert (or be forced if the phone does not do 3G) to using just 2G, Three does not have any 2G masts. So 2G costs three more as they need to pay Orange for calls so they understandably will want to keep you on their network and costs down for them.

Three branded handsets are programmed and locked so they will always try and seek out Three signals (even if there is a stronger 2G signal around) and standard phones will seek the strongest signal. Hence the T&C to try and ensure you use the 3 network if there is a signal even if there is a stronger 2g signal present.
