Knowing which virus would help diagnosis

The virus has probably changed the winlogon\shell entry in the registy, from explorer to itself, so you will need to run regedit and change it back, and then run malwarebytes (download on another pc and transfer if you still can't get web access) to see what other damage it has done.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell

    explorer.exe

Try avast instead of avg, a virus scanner is supposed to catch infections before any damage, not afterwards

I've used Avast for a few years, but even so some nasties have slipped past.

It may be better to do an online av scan as some viruses can disable onboard av's. Housecall is good http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/

The computer is 4 years old, so presumably the OP's son has loaded Win 7 recently.
He should therefore have the Licence key (daughter permitting) so all that is needed is to borrow a CD of the same version and reformat and reload Win 7.
