I have checked with the garage and it actually has 11.5 months MOT and it's just the tax that's only got 3 months. The car is on sale at the garage for £1250 and they said they could go down to £1200 but even for a garage I feel it's a bit much. I guess they're going by having a full service history bumping the price a bit but it is in excellent condition.

I have seen a 1999T reg astra 1.6 hatchback on autotrader for £990 but is a private sale but I've got my heart set on an estate now .

Also would a diesel be that much better?

This sounds a fair deal from a garage - assuming it's one that'd sort out problems, should u have any.

& an old cheap diesel probably false economy, should THAT develop a fault.

Thanks for all the comments. I have taken them all into consideration and have decided to go for the car and although I felt it a bit too cheeky to offer £1000, I have emailed them offering £1150 and said that of they accept I'll go and test drive it and pay the deposit Tuesday
