Vauxhall Astra Estate

Hi,
I am looking to buy a car (my first car) and have seen a Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Estate at a local garage.

I was just wondering what people think of it as a first car? The reason I'm considering an estate is because we have 2 small dogs and it would be good having the large boot for them.

Also, what sort of price should I be looking at? (I've tried Parker but without paying, I can't get a price). The car is a 1999 'T' reg and has done 88,000 miles and has full service history and 3 months tax and mot.

Any comments would be great. Thanks :)

You could try looking on ebay to see what prices they normally go for.

How much is the one you are going to look at up for?

Astras are good cars and with it being an estate makes it very practical especially if you have dogs

A very rough ball park figure for a 99T plate Astra Estate as described would be around the £750/£1000 mark, but none of us have seen it.

Don't buy it without a new MOT being issued.;)

Astra estae 1.6 assuming 8valve engine, Gives you a commonsense load carrier, with not too many problems!!

Nice to drive & easy & not expensive to fix, if something goes wrong.

Might be £1000ish in a garage, but good to see a service history if it REALLY is comprehensive, on an older vehicle like this.

    Sounds good to me!!

The dogs wont be squashed, 'cos sensible area for them, too.

    hi
i would say you not go far wrong with this just get it checked over well by someone i have had my current astra estate for 5 years now mine is a diesel
been a great car i just replaced the front discs and pads for £45 for the parts so they resonable to maintain plus we have 2 cocker spaniels and there plenty
off room in the back for them like otheres have said try and get 12 months mot on it and you should be ok
  • I would keep an eye out for a similar one but with diesel: has a rock solid Isuzu engine that returns good fuel consumption figures.

Thanks for the comments so far :).

I have checked with the garage and it actually has 11.5 months MOT and it's just the tax that's only got 3 months. The car is on sale at the garage for £1250 and they said they could go down to £1200 but even for a garage I feel it's a bit much. I guess they're going by having a full service history bumping the price a bit but it is in excellent condition.

I have seen a 1999T reg astra 1.6 hatchback on autotrader for £990 but is a private sale but I've got my heart set on an estate now :).

Also would a diesel be that much better?

    Thanks again

Not if you don't travel very far no.

My fiance may use the car to work one day per week which will be a 60-70 mile round trip but that's not completely decided yet.

Could make an argument for getting a diesel then - to be honest unless you're doing a lot of miles the extra money required to buy an equivalent car with a diesel engine can be a bit of a false economy.

Offer them a grand for it, on a take it or leave it basis.
