Hi

My other half is considering buying a 2001 1.5 DCI Expression with 117k on the clock.

Renault usually gets a bad reputation for reliability so Im not sure on this one.

Would there be much life left in it with this mileage?

Thanks

If it's had regular oil changes - 5000miles each time - or 10000 with a synthetic oil & been generally looked after, then it'd not be a major engine problem.

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk go there clik on reviews & you can find out good AND bad about all models!

Just anything else that goes, might actually have been sorted, with periodic maintainence.

It's not an excessive mileage, anyway, But do remember diesels cost (generally) more to fix if you do have aproblem, so maybe if you're paying a premium BECAUSE it's diesel, could you not find a petrol instead.

You won't find a huge mpg saving, unless you start covering high miles - then you might consider a lower milesga option to start with.

It depends how much it is. I would not pay a lot for it. Is this a phase 1 or 2? I know the phase 2's can be very reliable.

I wouldn't pay any more than £1000 for it but for £1k its probably a very good buy. They are safe and don't rust.

Its up for £1675 and its a phase 2 with the revised front end.

    Maybe a tad overpriced then?

If from a garage then its fair. Privately its a bit high. Theres one for sale near me (in Nottingham) 02/02 1.5 DCi 112K for £1000 privately.

That's the trouble with sensibly priced 'budget'vehicles - one can sound dear, just 'cos it's a couple hundred £$£$ more, but in real terms, may well be worth the xtra. If your personal £$£$ can of course.

Have a look at 2 or 3 to compare - even look at the state some are in, on the roads, of same year - then you'll see if the one you like is any better, the way it's worn it'self!!

Wouldn't pay more than £1100, mileage is fine if it drives ok. You will not find a more economical motor.:T

By the way, they don't get past 100K by being unreliable, ;)

If it has a full service history and some kind of warranty if you discover a day after you've bought it the head gasket has gone then it may well be worth while. The Phase 2's are quite a bit nicer.
