Now you know your PC has been compromised, I would personally want to scan it with half-a-dozen other security products to make sure (as far as you can) that the one quarantined file is the only dodgy one on your PC.

Have a look at these three for starters:

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    Trend Micro Housecall
    Spybot - Search & Destroy

Of course, if McAfee was running a heuristic scan it could be a false-positive and you may have quarantined a file that was perfectly safe.

    Hope this helps...

Esuhl, I don't know Trend Housecall.

Is it an alternative to Avira, AVG etc or does it supplement them?

    Thanks

There is no need to panic, especially if your PC is running normally.

Just follow the advice in Esuhl's post and maybe consider a better anti virus than Macawful.

And make sure you have Windows Firewall or an alternative switched on.

Thanks, all.I did a Spybot update and ran a scan.It found 4 problems,I pressed 'fix selected problems' and got four green ticks. Is everything now OK or do I have to do something else? I got 'Macawful' :rotfl:free with my BT package.Didn't realise it had a reputation.

Install, UPDATE and run scan with Malwarebytes.

SpyBot has it's place, but Malwarebytes is your best bet, which is why esuhl put it first in his list. :)
    Move along, nothing to see.

I agree, Spybot is good but Malwarebytes is better.

Use both. Each sometimes catches something the other doesn't. They are free and don't take up much space or resources.

It has a poor reputation and most savvy people use one of the free alternatives.

I have used AVG for years and never had a problem. I use Malwarebytes and Sypbot too. I also use ccleaner which isn't anti virus but does give your PC a good spring clean every day.

Some people say AVG is no longer very good and recomend Avira and others.

Personally I find a combination of Windows Firewall and AVG protects my computer. Plus the fact that I am careful which sites I visit and what I install.

But listen to the advice of others and maybe pick another free anti virus rather than AVG.

    Good luck

Its a free version of Trend Micro Anti Virus. I have Trend Micro AV/Firewall etc. and pay for it.

However I believe for Housecall you need to be online.
