Has Anyone else Been a Victim of This Petrol Scam

Went to fill my car up at the petrol station today having put the nozzle in, on the display was the price the previous user had paid, presuming this would reset as it normally does I proceeded to put petrol into the car however instead the numbers continued from the previous users price!! I immediately stopped and went to the check out clerk who refused to hear anything about it and said that I was trying to scam him!

I told him to check the cctv to assess whether the length of time filling up corresponded with the petrol, or to check the petrol gauge on the car and to see whether this corresponded to the amount of petrol of which he refused both, after much arguing he eventually conceded only on the threat of me calling the police.

I'm not sure if anyone else has been the victim of this but wanted to put it out to make people aware of what might be going on.

  • I wouldn't go so far as to call it a scam - not a nice thing to happen but a scam implies the garage is doing this intentionally - I don't think that's what's happening.

Everyone knows you have to wait for the counter to reset to 0 before pumping fuel. Duh.
  • On the facts of the situation it does appear either a mistake on the clerks part or a fault with the machine. To my knowledge the machines are checked regularly by an indept body to see if they are in proper working order so it's unlikely it would be faulty. Regarding the clerk; his aggressive attitude and intimidating demenour regarding payment suggests that their was forethought in my opinion of what he was doing, he refused to make any simple checks to see if a mistake had been made. Moreover he dropped all mention of payment the very instant I said I was calling the police. Now all this could be a simple mistake or it might not, just thought I'd inform the forum of what might be happening.

I've been driving for near on 9 years and I've never known to wait until it resets to 0? Every time I drive up there's the last persons total on the screen, then I put the pump in, press the lever and it resets then fill up.

    Not a particularly helpful answer.

Never seen this, and I've been driving for 22 years. I always wait til it says £0.

Isn't it written on the glass face of every pump, something along the lines of "See that indication is zero before fuelling"?

Must be dodgy petrol stations I visit then :rotfl:
The only reason I know the numbers are still there is cause I'm super nosy and have a look at how much the last person put in.. It does go to zero when you put the pump in though..?

  • I've been attending the same petrol station for the last 5 years and have always put the pump in for it to reset to zero and then fill. I hadn't seen this particular clerk before.
  • I would report the incident to the petrol station owners. It sound as if the attendant is running some sort of fiddle or is at least is incompetent at his job. You may save someone else being put in the same situation if he is fiddling the till.
