I had 8.30am-6pm days most week days during my first degree (including Wednesday afternoons – we were told you either played sport or passed the course and people who didn’t front for labs would not be in the latter group!) - and course work, lab reports and revision to fit in. I did it because I had to - working wasn't a luxury to buy extras, it was the only way I could fund my degree, so it was as important as my degree work. They also guaranteed me all the shifts I wanted in holidays.

I did it by learning how to be meticulous with my time management (if that meant getting up at 6.30am every day to make sure I was up to date, having got in from work at 11.30pm, then that is what I did). I had Saturday daytime and Sunday evening to do university work, and 2 or 3 evenings a week. If I had an hour between a lecture and a practical I would usually go to the library.

I’m certainly not the only person who had to do this...
