Keep your number and get the best new customer deals!
My company wanted £70 to upgrade my phone despite me telling them that I could get a free phone and 8 months cheap line rental as a new customer.
What you have to do is transfer your number to a new (different) network on pay as you go, and then transferred it back (each change takes a week).
It's a bit of a faff, but I got a new phone and will save over £300 this year compared to just staying put as an existing customer on the same £40 per month contract taht I am currently on. In my experience, by far the best deals are advertised in the back pages of the tabloid press.

The alternative is to simply get another handset on a new number. Then on the PAYG handset you leave a message on your answerphone to the effect that your number has now changed to............................0
