Cancel domain name

I've cancelled a domain name (which I've never used!) with Nominet. However it looks as if my provider (BT) can go on charging me £8.97 per quarter 'maintenance charge' until the 2 year renewal period is up. Are they really entitled to go on charging me for a name that will now be available for anyone else to use?

Have you cancelled that part of your contract with BT?
What does the maintenance charge cover?
It sounds as though that is for hosting the domain.

You are being ripped off with £8.97 per quarter when your .co.uk name is £2.99/year elsewhere.

What does the £8.97 cover? Are you sure it is not hosting or email forwarding?

No the hosting is part of BT Internet Business Pack which is another £15 per quarter. As far as I know the £8.97 per quarter is purely for 'maintaining' the domain name itself. The fact that this is part of a business package may explain some of it. But I'm a self-employed individual working from home, that's all! My concern is that it seems they will go on charging for the remainder of the 2-year registration period, even though I've already cancelled the domain name registration with Nominet. I just want to know if they're entitled to do that.

If it is part of the contract then yes, they can do this - a contract is a contract after-all....

If you have a contract for this service then I don't see what the problem is.

Next time read the T&Cs.
