Try a broker like Adrian Flux to see if they can help.

It is likely to be pretty expensive, so you might have to rethink your plans.

It would probably be cheaper to sell you car at a reduced price and then buy a car at the required spec which has not been modified, when you take into account the extra cost implications.

It is a saxo 1.6 engine you've put in?
You would pobably need the brakes off it as well, and even then it's doubtful anyone would insure you for a price you can afford that is. Adrian Flux deal with some, Footman James maybe, but you will need to know the extra bhp. You may have been better off selling it, taking the loss and buying a bigger car.
    Or just driving slower.

I've thought about going to a few companies and playing them off against each other.

Good luck with this bit. I cannot quite imagine any insurers falling over each other to insure you.

i think adrian flux is the best option but to be honest a non modded car with the larger engine would proberly be less to insure

Also, the car wouldn't sell when we tried and the prospect of having to buy another car afterwards and have yet more losses was not so appealing

It will sell if you price it realistically!

    3. I have a lot of reasonably heavy guitar equipment which I need to lug around. The 954cc it currently has struggles with any weight.

there may be trouble ahead, nowadays no one has to lug around heavy guitar equipment, with the advent of small combos, pods and so on, you may have difficulty explaining why you haven't told the insurer you play in a band, that's what they may assume if you have a bump with the gear inside.

DON'T try Ecar Insurance. They have a really bad reputation for service.

It would almost certainly have been cheaper to sell the car and buy a better one which you can insure unmodified.

    However....

Get a copy of one of the Kit Car magazines such as Complete Kit Car or KitCar and try some of the brokers that advertise in it. They are used to dealing with odd vehicles.

    The usual brokers are:
    Osbornes
    Adrian Flux
Graham Sykes (I don't recommend them personally)
    Sureterm Direct
    Hill House Hammond

Plus you'll learn what a properly engineered and modified car looks like, not just a noisy hot-hatch.
