Young Driver, No NCB, Modified Car, Help!

Does anybody know of any good places to go for new drivers with modified cars? Unfortunately in my case the mod is essential as I need a bigger engine to make the car useful to me. What's the best way to go about it? I've thought about going to a few companies and playing them off against each other. HELP!

What car is it? Make, Model engine sizse ? What mods ?
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Ax Dimension 1996, Mods: 1.6 Engine, and gearbox to match, 3 to 4 stud wheel conversion (basically swapped suspension from a saxo/106 but not uprated or anything).
  • How old are you? Are you male or female?

'in my case the mod is essential as I need a bigger engine to make the car useful to me'

Why wasn't it useful enough before if you don't mind me asking?

As in a Citroen AX? You modified it? :| lol

Most insurers will cover you but even something as basic as alloys up the cost like crazy. Make sure your V5 has the new engine number etc on it.

Why is the 1.6 engine essential, if you can tell us it may point to a specialised insurer.
  • I would be surprised if any insurer touches you to be honest. One thing is for certain you will need a complete engineers report for the modfied engine without it not a chance. Assuming you can get an insurer to accomodate such a risk it will come at a premium, young driver plus modifed engine not something that any insurer I know of would entertain.

    Why is the engine essential...

1.the car does NOT like driving on motorways at all, you have to rag the engine to keep it comfortably at 65mph. Driving to my uni is an hour on motorways, and I have to drive down to Devon in the Summer
    2. The car struggles on steep hills with any more than 2 people in it (Exmoor...?)
    3. I have a lot of reasonably heavy guitar equipment which I need to lug around. The 954cc it currently has struggles with any weight.

I have been struggling to find other engines (ie a 1.4) in any reasonable condition and the 1.6's are quite easy to get hold of

Also, the car wouldn't sell when we tried and the prospect of having to buy another car afterwards and have yet more losses was not so appealing

There are some places but they charge a bomb!
  • Just buy a car with a bigger engine. Insuring any car with a modifed angine to an engine the car wasnt designed to hold is notouriously difficult and expensive. Add to it being a young driver and I would suggest selling the car buying a slight bigger engine and insure that. It will work out cheaper in the long run....
