Smelly washing machine

Our washing machine (Bosch) smells. We first noticed the smell about 12 months ago, the machine would have been just over 12 months old. Some clothes we had just washed came out smelly, so washed them again, same thing. Then we noticed that the washer itself was smelly when you put your nose to the open door. Have tried boil washes, put on a wash with just soda crystals, put on a bleach wash, nothing works smell still there. The machine is now out of guarantee so cant take that route.

Can anyone please suggest what I can do. Thanks

Have you checked inside the rubber door seal for stray (and by now mouldy) socks? Get your fingers inside all the lips and have a good feel around...it's surprising what gets trapped in there...(ugh).

  • Is there a filter that needs cleaning out? Check the manual.

I believe most brands have one behind the bottom panel which (usually) can be removed. The filter can be screwed out, washed under the tap and screwed back in.

Might be worth checking, could be all sorts of gunk in there.

Take the detergent drawer out, and clean it along with as far down the pipe into the machine as you can. Take the bottom front panel off, and you will find a pipe with a bung in it - carefully remove the bung and drain off the remaining water (which will probably stink!). Once it is totally drained, unscrew the filter assembly on the left, and clean that out as much as you can.

I would then give it a run on hot with a weak vinegar solution in it - vinegar is pretty good at covering other smells, but also then washes away afterwards leaving it all smelling fresh.

After you get it as good as you can, remember to leave the door open between washes (avoids mould building up) and try to use about half the detergent the makers suggest. A lot of the smell seems to come from build up of unused powder than stays damp and goes mouldy.

When not in use, leave the washing machine door open very slightly. This will stop it going mouldy.

Yes, although on other makes the pump filter may not be in the same place-look in your manual. On Bosch's it's usually bottom right on the front.

I add soda crystals most times I do a wash, rather than just the odd occasion. It keeps the washing machine clean and non smelly (cheaper than using calgon every time), and is a good stain remover.
