Laptop Computer £330 Any Good ?

Comments

  • So you would recommend a laptop which is the same spec as the one suggested at Comet, without the new style brightscreen, and is £50 more?

Thought this forum was about money saving.....

It's not exactly the same spec, a big bonus is the extended battery life.

Laptops have to be weighed up for what you want to use them for, portability being a big selling point for most users. This laptop has double the battery life compared to the acer.

The Lenovo has bluetooth, the acer does not.

The extra money can be argued away with the extra features. A Bluetooth dongle being a tenner, a larger battery for the acer being at least 40 quid and not taking the battery life up to that of the Lenovo.

It's all about desired use, and choice.
  • The Acer does have bluetooth - Since I bought it for my mum I can confirm that...
  • I'm going by the stats on the page that was linked, which are often wrong.

Anyway, not here to start a flame war, just offering an alternate, and a bloody good one.

Why hasnt this post been removed due to blatant advertising, even though it's been reported as abuse?

Because management are quick to jump if I offer people "a good deal" on web design services, so if he's offering a good deal on a laptop from his website, its violating the forum rules just as I was.
  • Hello,

Okay, I'm completely clueless about laptops and technology in general but desparately need to buy a laptop that I can take into work with me to use. Have been looking at Tescos and comparing the ones they have but it's pretty confusing. Can anyone advise what I really NEED to look out for in terms of RAM and memory and the processor?

It would be nice to buy something that isn't going to be completely obsolete in the next say 3-4 years, but equally I don't really want to pay out for loads of things I don't really have a need for.

Here's what I need it for:

    Basic word processing
    Surfing and emailing
Will be getting broadband soon, so wireless
DVD drive to play and record
At least 2 or 3 USB ports
Ability to load digital dictation software and then to play CDs through this.
A reasonable size hard drive for storing stuff on.
Ability to use a wireless (or plug in) standard size keyboard with it is important.

A sound card with a game port (no idea what this is, been told that a recommended one is "Creative sound card") - are these all pretty standard these days?

SVGA video card - no idea really what this is again, is this pretty standard on laptops

Watch DVD movies and play CDs

I would NOT need it for playing computer games or stuff like that.

Also how do you get a "personal firewall" - does this come as standard anti virus software or do you need to buy and load this separately?

Have seen a laptop in Tescos for £299 which seems a great price but just not sure if it's a good buy for what I need. Maybe if someone could recommend the sort of spec I need I could take another look at Tescos.

Thanks in advance for any tips/advice.

    Regards

    you need WiFi
all laptops come with at least 2-3 usb ports
    1.5ghz
40gb to 80gb for the hard drive
go for one with a dvd-rw drive or at least a cdrw/dvd combo drive
512mb or 1gb of ram (alot come with 256mb with cheap ones u can add more ram easily)
graphics card are built in, most laptops use system ram, either 32mb or 64mb.
windows has a built in firewall

https://www.avast.com antivirus/firewall - totally free with free updates

dell laptops prob will do yr trick, around 300-400 £
