With the card readers I know Nat West, Nationwide and Barclays use the same and you can use any card in any reader. Saves keeping 3 of the things!!

I don't understand why you need to use a card reader for repeat payments.

I paid my Nationwide credit card bill out of my current account last night. Smile have all my Nationwide account details listed already in my bills list, and they know I make regular payments to them. Why do they need a code to show it's me paying my bill and not a fraudster?

Fair enough have codes to set up new payments, or for payments into individuals accounts, but it seems over the top for repeat bill payments.

It must be a nusiance if you like banking on the go and you have to take your card reader to work and on holiday etc.
Here I go again on my own....

Santander are the worst for strict security, I don't have a problem with them looking after my money carefully, (I appreciate it), however it does pee me off when I make a large transaction and they automatically block my card from further use without letting me know they did it.

I was in Asda the other week and had to pay for my groceries via credit card because my debit card was blocked!

OH has RBS and Nationwide current accounts, as do I. We have a small collection of card readers. However RBS don't think he has one of theirs (though we have two of them between us as well as two from Nationwide) so RBS refuse to allow him to set up new payment (in fact to pay to his own account outside RBS) though obviously he could use my RBS or his Nationwide one with no problem if they accepted that he has such a thing. (He's requested a card reader but heaven knows when it will arrive.)

We have each received a Coventry bingo card - even more trouble than a card reader because it is unique and can't be swapped around - although it has the advantage of being photocopied and could be kept at work, in a wallet as well as at home.

I think they are brilliant. Their strict security prevented me from being well and truly ripped off.

As far as card readers are concerned my husband, with is with Natwest, only has to use his card reader when paying a new bill - so it is actually quite infrequent.

Rapport was hopeless for us - simply froze the whole PC up every time we tried to log into NaWest.

We took it all off again, after speaking to NW, who told u that there are many teething problems with it.

I don't mind the card reader - you only have to use it once, to set up a payee on your list, after that you can pay the bills without the reader.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

Right, will start a secure message campaign to get smile to stop forcing you to use the reader on subsequent bill payments! :)

Verified by visa - I lost out on gig tickets recently because after 2 attempts at entering this password on my fiddly iphone keyboard, my card was blocked, although I wasn't told. Two attempts. Dozens of secure messages have not got me any closer to confirming why this happened. However, I was told I had to change the password - fair enough. Changing the VBV password depends on you remembering your username though. 'If you don't know your username, you will find it on any confirmations of online payments made with this card'. Um, no you won't, because it doesn't show on there.
I hate VBV with a passion, I try and keep it not activated on my card(s) for as long as possible as I keep forgetting the password for the cards when the time comes to buy something online because I don't buy online that often.

I have found that although some websites "force" you to use VBV, if you haven't "enrolled" for it, then you can simply by-pass it by filling in your details (card number, DOB,name etc) on the registration screen, continuing to the next screen and cancelling at that stage. Sometimes the card will decline but usually works if you try a few more times.

All in all, having more passwords and suchlike doesn't make me feel safer; it puts me off from wanting to shop online.
