Hiya
Through a long and complicated story I would personally rather not share, I am now considering living away from my parents perminantly by moving in with my Grandmother.
I went to uni in 07/08 and everything seemed fine. Since then whenever I've come home its been very difficult. I stay out of the house as much as possible.
Things have come to a head now it's Easter and I have stayed away from home again. It's so bad that I don't feel I am welcome at home anymore.
My Grandmother is happy to let me move in. She 2 spare bedrooms that are adjoined, one which has a sofa and a TV, near the bathroom. basically I'd share the bathroom and kitchen with her the rest of it would be my own.
I am wondering how this could affect my student loan entitlement, and what I would actually have to do to go through the process to proove to them I am no longer being supported by my parents.

I'll say no effect in these circumstances. You're trying to make yourself estranged, and therefore it will not be agreed.0

I would have to agree with Taiko at the moment. You have not provided enough information to define you as estranged from your parents. I understand that you don't want to go through your personal circs on here, but maybe you would consider PMing me or T with the info so we can make a more informed judgement.0

Thanks for understanding that I don't want to share all the nitty gritty details in public. Here's what I will share.
Basically there was a rather large falling out with my mum at xmas 09 that led to me walking out of the house. I did come back but she is very cold to me about it.
Since then there has been nothing but arguments, with my 15 yr old sibling now joining in on the arguments against me.
I feel that it would just be better all around if I didnt live there anymore. They already provide me no support when I am away anyway.
I dont even know how I'd go about prooving estrangement/declaring estrangement.0 -
Even on that, I'm still going to say no. You leaving the parental home seems to be your own choice, and any evidence of this would be extremely weak.
I'm one of the more lenient assessors around, but even I couldn't agree this.0 -
It has been said by my parents that it'd be "better if you just f***** off"
Not nice to hear I assure you. I'm less concerned about my 3rd year at uni, im more concerned about entitlemtn for my teaching course at PGCE.
They are rather well off (least they will be next year with Mothers new job) and I'm worried what I would actually get (whether it'd be anything!)0 -
Just a quick question. I spoke to student finance they said if my parents had told me to leave it still no different. I'd need a social worker? Can you even get a social worker at 21?0
-
I imagine you can get a social worker at 21.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked
50p saver #40 £20 banked
Virtual sealed pot #178 £80.250 -
it all just seems so complicated not sure what I even have to do. I just wanted things to be easy. They want me out, i want out, found a place to live and dont want to tied to them when they want nothing to do with me.
Government is never easy and its so ridiculus when I'm an adult! Why is 21 an adult everywhere else (or rather 18) unless SLC are involved!0 -
To be classed as estranged by SFE is much much harder than it is to be classed as estranged by the benefits agencies when you are under 20. You wouldn't have a social worker unless you were fleeing violence (most of my 16 yr olds who are kicked out don't get one, so you have no chance).
You need to be able to show that your relationship with them has broken down beyond repair, that you have no contact with them and receive no support from them and that this is unlikely to change. The situation would normally have existed for at least a year, although there is provision to award this status where this time frame has not been met.
SFE will not take your word (or your parents') alone, you would need someone to support your claim (which is why a social worker was mentioned). This could be a welfare advisor at uni (I do this as part of my job) or you can go to a solicitors and get them to write a letter (you basically swear under oath that this is true), though you'd need to pay for this. The welfare advisor would also be able to help you appeal if you were turned down.
I am still unsure whether you would qualify based on the information you have given.
Depending on the PGCE you are planning to do, you should qualify for £4000-£9000 tax-free bursary and the non-income assessed maintenance loan as a minimum if your estrangement doesn't go through (election & budget-dependent) (see www.tda.gov.uk for info, 2011 info due June 2010).0 -
Thanks for your help. Jsut worried because of them getting approx £62k (when i apply that's for this year 09/10)
SO i wont get anything mantainance. :S This system just seems a pain.
I think the best course of action might be to go speak to my welfare advisor and get them to help me0
