I just rang up about a farm job which was advertised in the local paper and the guy actually laughed in my face , even when I offered to work voluntarily! We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment0 -
Hi All,
Congratulations x-spender!
Blairwitch- that must have been soul sapping news for you (have just caught up threads) We have just got dd1 through uni with no jobs around to come out to and goodness knows what we will do for dd2 (just starting A levels) no chance of affording it for her. BUT and it's a big but she will always have 100% support. My dad was the same though for me, made me all the more determined my own kids wouldn't get caught in that cycle. Realistically you will probably have to look at an alternative approach, but don't give up. Is commuting to your nearest uni out of the question? How about nannying and fitting uni work round in a part time degree,The Lady magazine always has lots of part time nanying jobs with accomodation included; or the Open university depending on your course. I took mine with the OU while working full time. Not easy, but possible. There is a thread on here somewhere for local burseries(money left in wills etc) so could be worth a look. Depends if you want the degree or lifestyle I suppose, personally I think it will become the norm to commute to the nearest uni, like Europe does. It is possible though but you need to be pretty determined and probably gear it towards a specific job at the end. If you worked part time in the field you were looking to go into you could be getting experience at the same time, which would give you an edge in the jobmarket, even though it takes you longer. I think dd1 will have to do this to get her masters, and work for nothing to get the experience. I sometimes think though that Plan B often throws up loads of opportunities and experiences that can surprise you and lead on to even better things0 -

Blairweech Hugs (have too much back ache to look for smileys sorry
)...know what you mean about dad not being an ogre but is old and reluctant to change. Ma is the same and just as I'm 'recovering' and 'stressing' about her visit wed am (and on a 2 day fast) I find she's put her DISGUSTING artificially sweetened packet porridge in the porridge box and for starters it smells awful then cooks completely differently in my micro so I end up with oatcake!!! (well a lump of oatcake to be precise :P)...as if I'm not frugal enough . I'm more frugal than her and when I don't get refunded for some herbs I buy for friends @ NTD on Sat and I need a little spending £££ for day trip on Monday she says 'how much cos I don't have much' and I'm like 'hello you KNOW how frugal I am...just enough...(£5 but it was actually less than that).
Ma is one big neurotic drama queen....added to which
On the way home she had a wobble and mid fast she says 'will be living off rice and water for a month' after a mistake with her train ticket...and I'm like 'wrong thing to say when I'm not eating'. I offer to help out but she won't have that. Whether she'll do my frugal basic tips I don't know. All because the CC has to be paid off in full every month. Whilst this is honourable if it's not possible it's not...it's not like it wasn't an unnecessary blowout...it was a train ticket home cos she'd made a mistake with the original booking! And of course there was more tantrums and tiaras when she got home (baring in mind I'd been giving emotional support for 2 days @ this point I was like absolutely drained and Monday night I didn't get to bed till 10.30pm supporting her) and I'm like Hello you just had a bad day = NORMAL = get over it!..
Anyhow we'll see if she's frugal or not this month. If she keeps shopping @ Mr C she has no chance (Mr A is only another 5 mins walk up the road)...
Enough of a rant...veg garden tomorrow :t...
Ps.frugaldom yeah newtondee is pretty special....good place to chill out...
