Bank Cards as Status Symbols and Acceptance

The old "flash the plastic" status symbol went out in the 90's, I guess there are sad people out their albeit with mental issues of sort i.e. depression, split modus operandi etc who worship their cards judging by some of the threads around, but some are just obsessed.
No doubt some idiot will find a medical condition for it soon, plastic card dysphasia or something.
As long as my Credit and Debit cards do service me in the way I want then I am happy, I certianly do not get a hard on when looking at my Visa card. :cool:Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.0 -
I've never seen anyone ever with an amex card, and i wouldn't be that impressed if i did
On the other hand my husband's sulking since I got a new card for the joint account and mine's contactless (that thing that's of absolutely no acceptance at all) and his isn't!
I was most disappointed to find it didn't come with a nice long waterslide all the way home - the adverts lied to meLittle miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -

Vanquis I associate people in debt?!
premier debit card means you must be comfortable as they typically only offer these bank accounts to people with £XX,XXX amounts of investments with that bank.
I have a Gold Natwest card with a £250 cheque guarantee limit, however they are phasing cheques out now so these limits are also being reduced.
Also to add, Natwest Cards are now Visa debit and the gold cards are being defaulted back to a purple colour and yes I will be calling wanting a Gold coloured card with them.
Amex is regarded as excellent credit worthiness due to their more stringent checks, So I been told and typically you have to earn at least £20k to apply for one so filters out a few.
Some cards are by invitation only, that is then where the exlusive treats and services come in to play.0 -
I would like to thank everyone who has taken the trouble to reply to my post, part of the project is if wealth is associated by the cards someone carries (No it does not matter to me personally), so for example someone having a Visa Electron card conjurers up and image of poor, in debt perhaps unemployed, or having a Gold card conjurers up comfortable bank balance, good job, 2 homes etc. Not that I am saying people having Visa Electron are so please don't take offence, it’s just how some perceive it to be.
I would like to state that it does not matter to me personally as I know people who do have Visa Electron and are comfortable off with no debt because they simply are happy that way, others have flash cards, are in debt and are far from happy.0 -

You might want to tell that to someone on mainland Europe, where there is no such thing as Visa Debit, only visa electron:o0 -

I've got that too, i've never ever used it, and the only place i've seen that takes it is pret a manger at stansted airport, and starbucks, but they never have the reader in a place where you can actually touch the dam thing so its easier to just pay normally0 -
People that apply for credit or in general purchase commodities for social status and kudos are seriously some sad individuals.
Consumerisation and capitalism has gone way above and beyond any control, I see old men my age with iphones, don't know how to operate the thing, but only have one for the social status, and because everyone else has it.
SAD!!!!
I got into debt that way, I had EVERYTHING 3 years ago, and I used to think by having everything it made me superior over others.
It doesn't and the people I was lauding it over, are now the same people i'm 'slumming' it with in subprime!
people need to grow up!She LEFT me, she LIED, and she made me foot the BILL ! :mad:0 -

that's primarily because the Visa scheme allows banks to operate a card however they wish - so to maximise their profit they issue it to the customer as just "Visa classic" and collect the max interchange fees from merchants.0
