Hi guys. Thanks for all the replies so far.
So would this be better;
Get rid of McAfee replace with Avast
Get rid of Ad-Aware, replace with Malwarebytes (and let this run at start up)?
Keep Windows defender turned on.
Is there anything else I have to do, also is there any potential for conflicts between the programs? Which program is best for the firewall; Windows firewall or should I download another program??
Thanks again, and Happy Easter!Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
Get rid of McAfee, replace with Avast, MSE or Avira.Get rid of McAfee replace with Avast
I removed McAfee from someones laptop, installed Avira, which then found '00s of infections.
Ad-Aware, IMO is past it, Malwarebytes is much better, it cannot be set to run on startup.
Run it manually, say every week or two, unless you suspect something is wrong.
Defender, you can leave it, but is not the greatest of programs.
There shouldn't be any conflicts at all.
Firewall, Vistas in-built one, should be fine, especially if you use a router.
These days I find 3rd party firewalls cause grief, because more people are sharing printers and media streaming etc, which mean they can be tricky to set up.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Okay, so Avast, MSE or Avira? The final question, hopefully.........

Sorry, I have a similar problem on my kids laptops. They are running Norton though and have found that Norton doesn't always pick up viruses.
Should I remove Norton and download Avast or something else instead?0 -

Blimey mate , you'll be wanting someone to come around and install it next.
I had Avast, but found it slowed my very low spec old PC, switched to Avira, light on resources, even less than MSE, but doesn't scan email, but would quickly zap anything nasty that opened.
Avira has a nag screen which pops up when it updates, it's easily disabled, but this puts some off.
MSE, also has some anti-spyware, as well as AV, fairly light on resources.
All which means, there's not much between them, it's down to personal choice, even down to the fact that you might prefer one interface over the one I prefer.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Seriously, too much choice can almost be worse than no choice at all. It's like when there's too many girls at a house party..........kind of, lol.
I did a bit of research on 2 of them and it seems that the word on the street (and the net) is that Avira is better at scanning, but Avast has a better update system.
Might have to toss a coin.
Edit: Oh and then there's AVG to consider (the hot new foreign chick enters the party...........)Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
Actually, just noticed that Avast and Avira are about 40mb in size whereas AVG is only a touch over 2mb. Seems strange.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0

Sizes are irrelevant
AVAST has good detection and email scanning but tends to slow the computer down a little
AVIRA has best detection and lightest on resources but no email scanning
I personally wouldnt touch AVG. It tends to cause no end of problems:idea:0 -
Yeah, I was just wondering how a program can be 20 times smaller than another similar program.
Do you know if Avast or Avira have any site advisor functions, as that's one of the few things I've found useful on McAfee.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0
