Really? Even that 'marketing' stuff?
What do you suggest I do in regards to laptop protection? Currently I have Windows Defender on, McAfee (free version with o2) and scan with Ad-Aware every couple of weeks. Thanks.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
Marketing stuff?
Well the choice is yours, but I personally wouldnt touch Mcafee with a bargepole.
Regardless, AD AWARE is pretty much uselesss these days. id recommend monthly scans with malwarebytes.
Id also recommend using FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin to stop web based viruses (People seem to be catching these more and more):idea:0 -

Oh, actually the marketing stuff is some (probably unnecessary) crap from Sony that was in the Windows defender start-up log. Incidentally it's actually blocking Malwarebytes' in the startup programs. Is it best to let it through?
What's up with McAfee? And what's a better free alternative? Will Windows own built in stuff do the job? I've got no idea what does what to be honest. Last time I tried to protect my PC I ended up with all the different programs flagging each other up as viruses.Instigated terrorism the road to dictatorship.0 -
Of course you should let malwarebytes run
Mcafee is just too bloated and causes more problems than it solves. Its also very poor at stopping malware and really slows computers down
Id recommend AVIRA or AVAST for your free av. Windows inbuilt firewall is fine unless you need extra control. Malwarebytes as a secondary scanner. FIREFOX with the NOSCRIPT plugin to prevent infection through web pages
if you do decide to remove Mcrapee at ANY time then use the MCAFEE REMOVAL TOOL

Still on SP1 as (same as XP) I heard upgrading to SP2 creates more problems than it's worth.
Shouldn't after all this time, even if you don't use IE it's still best to keep it updated, after all Windows update uses it.
By keeping everything up to date, you fill any security holes in your OS.Move along, nothing to see.0
