3G data cards

Help for a non techie please.

(Background:For the third time in a year I lost my BT line -due yet again to anti-social multi-millionaire farmers knocking down the posts and driving off or cutting through the cable with so-called hedgecutters..actually hedge detroyers. I only use my fixed line for broadband and am lost when it goes....can now be up to 2 weeks to repair.)

If you get one of these 3G cards do you somehow use their ISP or do still need a broadband supplier?

The T-mobile one seems by far the cheapest....if I read correctly it's £20 for unlimited usage which seems extraordinary. Does anyone have any experience of their quality of service?

Thanks

The web & walk has a unlimited download limit of 2gb!!!

The speed is 384kb so its not as fast as broadband but 7.5x faster than dial up.

We've got 3 for work, they work great.

Make sure you have a pcmcia slot for it to go in though, not all laptops have them & desktops don't. The external USB boxes don't work with them.

  • With 3G- you will be going with a supplier e.g. Orange, Vodaphone, T-Mobile- these are your ISP also

Once you agree a contract with them they will give you a 3G card to slot into you PCI slot, then you are ready to go (once its activated)

The only downside to this is that a 3G cards will never be as fast as broadband. But if you don't need 24meg broadband than this isn't an issue!

I have a data cable for my mobile and I use the internet via Orange's GPRS service. I presume that you could get a 3G mobile and a data cable instead of a 3G card.
