Pickfords - are they expensive?

Just had a visit and a quote from Pickfords for our removals. They have advised it will be around £1200. We are moving from a 2 bed mid terrace to a 3 bed semi 30 miles away. Their online quote said 'from' £360 - I'm guessing that is for almost zero possessions then!
So are they particularly expensive? I have a local company coming to give me a quote tomorrow and I'm hoping that will be nearer to the £500 mark as I'd rather hand deliver my own belongings than pay £1200 (plus insurance and numerous waiver charges!) to move.

I think they are expensive.
We used GB Liners for our last move (which also included 3 months storage) and they were very good.

Can't remember the exact quote, but Pickfords were amongst the most pricey when I moved. As you say, try local companies, not the national ones. local firm were great for me.0

Crikey!
We moved house 6 weeks ago, from a very crammed 4-bed detached house to a similar sized one. OK, we only moved about 5 miles, but we paid £652.00 including VAT.

All the Pickfords staff I've watched work have always been polite, careful, able, personable, attentive and hard-working. They seem to have teams that work hard and together to achieve the job, without a hint of discontent about how large/awkward/heavy/unexpected any item was proving to be. They're cheery, so make for a pleasant moving experience.
Some other companies employ "a bunch of blokes that can lift stuff", which is a different thing entirely.0 -

That's a fair comment that I suspect applies to all the large national firms.0 -
We paid £240 to move a very packed 2 bed semi, 14 miles away from our new place. We packed our own boxes, except wardrobes and they dismantled and reassembled the furniture. We decluttered a lot before we moved. This was a local independent firm.0

We moved in October and Pickfords quoted us £900 plus vat.
Although Pickfords are 'local' to us (Their depot is less than a mile from our new house, about 2 from our old house), I found them extortionate! We used a company that was from the other side of Nottingham and paid £600 inclusive. They were incredibly hard working and all but one were not English speaking. This was not a problem, they understood basic English and knew what 'lounge' 'kitchen' 'Bedroom 1/2/3/4' meant. They arrived at 6 am ish and worked until gone 8.30pm. (With a couple of hours break during the day wile keys etc was sorted out.
Would definatley recommend them if your in or around Notts.

I'm just looking at removal companies today myself. I've had a quote of £435 for packing and moving 65 miles away from a 2 bed flat to a two bed house. Again, a local company, based in West Sussex.0

Pickfords quoted us three times the price that we paid to someone else!
We checked all their insurance documents, they were very professional, provided us allthe packing materials and on a very, very hot day (where did they go I wonder!) the men worked like dogs. I have no idea what Pickfords would have done for the extra £1200!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Try local removal companies if you're only going a short distance. My local company charged me £180 for a move that Pickfords wanted to charge me 5 times that. Fair enough, the guys that turned up did look like rejects from a Guy Ritchie gangster movie, but they got the job done.poppy100
