thanks for info but me buying a hard drive even second hand would mean i lose more money as it is ive not had any offers on the pc, it dont seem that they go for much at all

Then there won't be much change in the selling price whether you sell it with the HDD or not..... so just take the HDD out, keep it as a apare drive, and sell the remaining PC chassis or give it to a deserving local charity.

It looks as if the OP doesn't understand that the ordinary wiping of the hard drive does not destroy the data on it. The data remains, it's the way of accessing it that is wiped and there is software available that will still read the data.

However, it does require special software plus the determination to do so, and the chances that the person who receives the computer would be able to do that are slim.

It's a matter of perceived risk - if you've got data on the hard disk that you feel must not fall into a third party's hands then change the disk - otherwise, just wipe the disk and hope that the third party has no interest in who owned the computer previously.

really?? sorry to sound really dumb but thought it would make a difference, surely to but hard drive on its own would be quite expensive.

hmm think your right here i didnt realise that the data would stay on after restoring to factory settings. the reason i thought it was all gone was because when you go to restore it says all files, date etc will be wiped clean

In my opinion, the best course of action is to do a single pass with DBAN and then install Windows.

Unless somebody has access to an array of computer forensic equipment, the necessary skills to operate it and a lot of time then there's no chance that anyone is going to be able to recover anything from the disk.

That's OK if you have a Windows installation disc and a valid key.

Of course it makes a difference, he's talking out his !!!!, obviously a PC that can be seen working and is ready to go will sell for more than one that requires parts adding to it before it even works.
