  • I have an Acer 4820 that claims to have Dolby Home Theatre Surround Sound. I don't know about that but it sounds pretty good compared to many laptops I've heard. In the early nineties I had an Acer travelmate with separate 'woofers & tweeters', sounded fantastic, however, it was the size of a paving slab :D

I purchased a XPS 17 3D model and noticed how rich & full and deep the sound and base were. I then purchased an MSI 2.1 model with DynAudio (I enhanced it with THX TruStudio Pro software which i purchased after purchasing an Alienware m18x - read below) because I read how terrific the speakers were, but compared to the XPS the base sound fell very short. Sometime after that I purchased an Alienware m18x with 2.1 speakers with Waves MaxxAudio included and couldn't figure out why the sound was almost identical to the MSI setup. Then I started missing with the MaxxAudio settings and was shocked to learn how much it enhanced the sound after I copied the settings off the XPS. I tried to purchase Wave software for my MSI but the cost was too high, so I tried the THX TruStudio Pro software by Creative for $25 but whatever configuration setting I tried, it was better but it still couldn't hold a candle to either XPS or m18x. Apparently you will only find Waves MaxxAudio-lite software bundled on select XPS models and Toshiba's high end line. (You do need a built-in subwoofer) (included on the XPS 15)
