Defraggler v Auslogics

I downloaded Defraggler last night based on recommendations on here.

It said the desktop was 58% fragmented and the laptop and month old netbook were 42% fragmented.

I already had the Windows defragmenter set to defrag automatically.

I ran Defraggler and left them to defrag overnight. This morning they were all stuck at 26%, 38% and 76%. Analysed them again and it was still showing them as being fragemented at the same amounts.

I analysed with Auslogics and it said they were all only 1-2% fragmented. I analysed the netbook with the Windows defragmenter and it also said it was only 1% fragmented.

The desktop and laptop are Vista and the netbook is Win 7.

I haven't noticed any slowness and only ran the defrag as a bit of maintenance.

Is there a problem with Defraggler and why is it recommended as being the best defragmenter?

Ive never had a problem with defraggler so I suspect something else is running thats affecting it (plus once its finished, microsofts own built in one would probably try and rerun and make a mess of things again)

That was one of the questions I meant to ask. I remember when I used to manually defrag years ago that I had to turn off everything except systray and something else.

Can you tell me what I need to turn off, or what are the only things that needs to keep running, when defragging? Or is that not necessary nowadays?

As I said, ive never had a problem myself (That said, I switch OFF the inbuilt one)

Best thing I can suggest is a scan with hijack for both computers so we can see whats running ~

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

  • Something common and personal you yourself, you have, on each / all three machines a non O/S programme running that you have personally installed.

Win7 handles [ 26% 38% and 76% ] pre-fetch and better than Vista, and in the particular Vista is an inglorious pig with Windows Search [ hard drive thrash issue ] Indexing.

I hide windows defrag from every machine I build and repair and link the link to defraggler, that way customers who previously were unwilling to use defrag are happy to do a little personal machine hygiene !

    Thanks for the replies.

I have since disabled the Windows defragger and will try Defraggler again on the netbook as it has the least added programs.

The programs I do have installed are all the basic stuff like Comodo FW and Avast on the Vista pcs, MSE on the netbook, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, etc. Mostly security and antimalware stuff.

    - you could disable Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, etc and then run defraggler to see if they are what's causing your problem, particularly if they are common to all three machines

The netbook was stuck at 67% for ages, but it was still defragging as the current state showed the number of fragmented files still going down for a while.

The defrag completed on the laptop which was good news. However, it was still showing 20 files as being fragmented, down from 45, and 372 fragments down from 551. It was still showing as 45% fragmented despite the defrag completing. I analysed it again and the files went back up to 45 and 42% fragmented.

I have now booted both in Safe Mode and running Defraggler again.

The left-field option is to forget about defragmenting entirely, since only the makers of (usually paid-for!) defragmenters seem to think it does much good.
