Eh, sometimes life isn't about what we find "suitable" or not, it's about what we can afford. In your particular circumstances your choices are very limited. Do you have a month's rent and deposit saved? Do you have a friend's sofa you can kip on in the short-term?

    Hi,
First of all i've decided to walk out of my family home, due to circumstances, no they can't be resolved. Please do not ask for the full story as it is private, and trust me there is no going back.
So my income is £161 a week
My Expenditure is roughly £100 a week
Will income and expenditure and debt be taken into account when applying for housing benefits?
    Any advice appreciated

What expenditure? If you have a car/ smartphone/ debts then these expenses will not be taken into consideration as they are not essential. If you need to pay child maintenance then this may be adjusted to account for your change in circumstances. If you cannot afford to service your debts then you may need to get a second job or go onto a Debt Management Plan with one of the free charities, CCCS or PayPlan. However this will wreck your credit rating for many years so is not to be taken lightly.

£100 a week is £5200 a year, which is far more than many families are living on (read the 'Live on £4K for a year' thread on DFW board)! At 19 the government says you only need to live in shared accommodation - you will not get your own flat or house funded - and you only need around £50 per week after rent and council tax are paid. Basically if you insist on leaving home you will have to take accommodation that you deem to be unsuitable, even if that means moving again after a month or two.

  • Hey Skint,

First I just want to say I'm really sorry to hear your situation. Its never nice when you cant resolve issues with family, and I really feel for you.

Secondly, like other posters have said, I'd really recommend looking for a room in a shared house/flat somewhere. If you look on www.spareroom.co.uk you'll hopefully find one that isnt as bad as you think its going to be - in fact odds are it will be much nicer! Sharing a house means as a group, (or even 2 of you) you will be able to usually afford a much nicer living space than you would have on your own, as you're splitting the cost for things like living room, kitchen etc. Plus if you pick right you may find someone to share whos company you will really enjoy. The last thing you want is to end up in a grotty studio flat somewhere with barely any company or support.

BTW am basing this on how i would have felt at 19, (Im 22 now!) as I was nearly in the same situation as you. I appreciate you might feel differently.

    Best of luck :D
