Can't renew tax because Insurance docs not arrived. Going away Easter!

I left it till the last few days to get my car tax renewed (expires 31st March) and my car insurance was also up for renewal (30th March). I took out new insurance with a different company yesterday (29th March).

Now, I thought I could renew my tax online but when I try to it says that there is no insurance on the system for my car or that it is about to expire. It says that it takes 24 hours for new insurance to appear on the system. I tried to get the tax online again tonight (well over 24 hours after I took out the insurance) and it still says that no insurance is on the system.

Now I can't renew my tax at the Post Office without a valid insurance document which I am yet to receive from my insurance company. It has to be the original document and not a copy/fax. This means I am stuck in limbo.

The big problem is that we are going away on Thursday for Easter and I have to have the car for the trip.

I will ring the DVLA tomorrow for advice but it's not looking good.

Anyone had this scenario before? Is there anything that can be done?

    Ask if your insurance can email you a pdf file of the certificate. That's what my insurance company do (Adrian Flux). I print it off on my printer and it's an "original" document.

    Having said that, I'd imagine the database is updated by now. Try in the morning like you say and fingers crossed.

    No point in doing it online as you still won't get the Tax Disc in time.

    That doesn't matter, online applications give a 5 day grace period.

    I've two bits of advice, both from personal experience.

    1. Don't bother phoning DVLA they aren't interested in helping you one little bit. All they'll say is you have to wait for the certificate to come through.

    2.If you're really desperate to the disc try using one of the short term insurance companies. I used tempcover which after quidco cashback cost me less than £8. They email the docs straight away so I printed off an original and had no problems at the post office. I've also used a self-printed one day insurance certificate to tax at a DVLA office. Obviously it depends on the how much you want to sort it before you go.

    What states? Where? The Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 was changed by the Finance Act 2008 to effect this change. It is the law of the land and not subject to various police forces' whims.

    Where does " it " state that ?

    This is from the DVLA website;

    " I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?

    When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive.
