No gas bill for 5 years!!

I moved into a newbuild property 5 years ago. Builder informed me that suppliers were Scottish Power for electricity and Scottish Gas for gas.
Contacted both companies with meter readings and details, electricity no problems, have been billed normally. Gas was another matter. Scottish Gas took all the details and told me I would receive paperwork out to give direct debit details etc. Didn't receive this and called again a few weeks later and was told that they had none of my details. She also told me that they didn't supply my address and to wait for my supplier to bill me and I could then contact them if I wanted to change to them. I have never received a bill in five years. I have tried to contact Scottish Gas again as my neighbours are all supplied by them and was told that my address does not appear on the National Grid!
I did put money aside each month at the beginning but as so much time has passed and husband was made redundant and the money has been used. Now I do not know what to do. Who would I contact to sort this out. I beleive Scottish Gas should be the supplier but they don't want to know!
I have googled this and beleive I am a shipperless address. Would I be liable to pay for the last 5 years gas (I know morally I am) or would they allow me to pay for the last year due to backbilling rules
Does anyone have any experience of this situation.
Would appreciate any help.

I believe they can bill you for a year unless they have tried to contact you

Actually, if your address is shipperless, everything you have used up to now will be written off I believe, as no one is your shipper and so no one can send you a bill. The post CharlieBilly linked to was one regarding numerous estimations and an accurate account. Only when you are assigned a shipper, will the charge start. You need to contact your supplier of choice, explain you believe you are a shipperless site and provide your meter serial number. It will probably need to be passed around the houses a bit to get it all sorted, and you may get a phone call back from an escalations team member depending on which supplier your choose, so bear in mind you're going to be on the phone a while :) Ah well. You're a very lucky lady, I believe!
  • Thanks for all the replies. No one has tried to contact me so far. Someone came to read the meter once but left confused saying it wasn't on his system but other than that no other contact.

If you are not sure whether your property is a shipperless site or not:

How to identify your gas supplier

You say you put money aside and thats all very well but why then use it or not still put money aside?

You say he was made redundant, lots of people loose there jobs, but still have to pay for energy. You wont be any different you end up paying some of that at some point
I did put money aside each month at the beginning but as so much time has passed and husband was made redundant and the money has been used.
  • Have received a bill addressed to The Occupier today for £800 dated from last March until this March. This is from Scottish Gas. Had a letter attached to say that the bills had been paid (don't know by whom) until March last year when they assume I moved into the property, asking me to call to set up an account and arrange to pay bill. Don't know what to do. Have checked the meter number and it is correct. How can someone else have been paying this as surely bills would have come to my address, but i've never received one?

Have received a bill addressed to The Occupier ...

Don't know what to do. ...
Radical as it may sound to you, as you are the occupier, why not contact the company with a view to setting up an account in your name and paying what you already owe for the gas you have consumed?
