IKEA Sofa broken - what are my rights?

Hi

I bought an IKEA sofa bed frame (and mattress) in September and one of the wooden slats has broken in two, making the sofa unusable. The damage appears to have been caused by me doing little else but sitting on the it (??!!) and this is annoying as I haven't had the sofa that long and expected better quality.

I would be grateful for any advice about my rights in this situation before I contact IKEA and whether I am entitled to a new sofa bed frame or refund and if they will/should collect the old one/deliver me a new one.

Thanks for your help ;)

ikea are generally very good with things like this?

can you check the sofa has a guarentee? I know they offer these with a lot of furniture and they are usually excellent such as my wardrobes - 10 years...

i'd have a look online if your sofa is still there, check out the returns page then give them a phone call... i dont think your first port of call is "your rights" really... just see what they say first.

Did you get it delivered or buy from a shop ?

Every time I have had a problem with an IKEA product (not often, but a handful of times), they have been excellent in solving it quickly. Regarding you rights before you call, the Sales of Goods Act will cover you comfortably here.

Ikeas quality isn't that good, so these things will happen occasionally. However they are usually very good at replacing faulty items.

I would call them and let them either repair the sofa, or replace the slat. Then if you have the same problem again in the future I would then look at replacing it for another model.

I guess your experience is different to mine then! Everything I have bought from them has lasted beautifully & my four kids are not the most delicate, so it isn't worth paying more!
I have only ever had TWO problems with them, having shopped there for 20 years, both occasions it was to replace a part that had broken on old stuff. The parts were sent out very quickly, at no cost adn no questions asked!
Give them a call and tell them the problem. Given how recent the purchase is I would be inclined to ask for a replacement sofa rather than a repair!

i think it depends what you buy really... some of the furniture is amazing quality and some of it is a bit shoddy - but if you look at how much your paying for them you can't really argue!

generally student flats get the £100 sofas that last like 6 months because they look nice but arent comfortable or last very long.

    serve the purpose though!

Have to agree with you - ten years ago I bought a bookcase and sofa from there as short term items, until I could afford something better. The bookcase is still going strong (including several house moves!) and three years ago I passed on the sofa, and it is still being used now!

My replacement sofa cost me three times as much, and lasted eighteen months. After three months of arguing I got a refund from the retailer. I have now gone back to another Ikea sofa, albeit a much more expensive one! :o
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Thanks to everyone who replied to my message and for all your suggestions, they are much appreciated. :) I perhaps sounded a bit formal regarding my 'rights' I really just wanted to know what I can expect when I speak to them. ;)

The sofa bed frame was cheap (and I am a student!) however, I haven't had an problem with IKEA stuff before - I got all my bedroom furniture (including bed) from there over 4 years ago.

I've just spoken to Customer Service who said that they would be happy to exchange the frame (can't really replace the slats) and the store will be in touch soon. As I didn't have the sofa delivered, I may have to take my old one back and pick up a new one but I can discuss this with the store.
    thanks again :j
