Skoda Yeti Advice re log book please

Hi about to buy a new Skoda Yeti from an online broker and they say they keep the log book for 6 months. Is this OK? Never bought this way before so just a bit cautious. Thanks for any advice.

No of course it isn't alright, it is a legal document, buy elsewhere.

A number of brokers do this and its pretty bad practice. Basically they, with the co-operation of a friendly dealer, are trying to cheat the manufacturer into giving them fleet discounts on vehicles that are never meant to be sold to individual customers. The reason they hold onto the log book is just in case the manufacturer does a spot check.

As above, choose a different broker, maybe try Drivethedeal or similar.

OP, I take it you are aware that you will effectively be the 2nd owner given that this is a pre-reg car we're talking about?

its a fiddle - avoid (unless its a lot cheaper) Causes you issues with insurance as you will not be the registered keeper and you lose any new for old benefits on your insurance as you will not be the first registered keeper

What are they doing here - registering the car as a demonstrator to get a discount?

(I've heard some dealers say they aren't allowed to sell demonstrators for 6 months)

V5 retention is quite common amongst some brokers. It can either be, as you suggest, getting hold of what is meant to be a demonstrator which dealers are supposed to keep hold of for 6-12 months in order to get a discount. Another way is for the broker to set themselves up as a rental company to get a fleet discount from the manufacturer, and again part of the conditions of that discount is to hold onto the car for at least 6 months+, hence the retention of the log book. Either way these vehicles should not be reaching the general public and the manufacturer would take a pretty dim view of those involved in this practice, particularly any franchised dealership.

Although, having said all that and given the state of the industry I think most manufacturers would probably turn a blind eye at the current time.

That's the thing, if you shop around you can often get just as good, if not better deals.
