pah, thats not a debt its just fraud and theft!

Isnt that the same though as making a debit card payment when you know that there is no funds in the account. Fraud, theft.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • I have a question along a smililar line to the OP. I bought an outfit for a wedding on Saturday. It is now Wednesday and the funds have not appeared anywhere on my online account. Usually the balance and money available would show the difference but neither reflects that money was spent on Saturday. I'm now worried as I withdrew a small amount of money from the account from a cash machine yesterday as it said I had the funds. If both clear I will be in a negative figure (only by £20 still). Shouldn't the funds have been debited from the "available" balance by now?

no because the payment will fail to authorise if the bank aren't willing to let you pay.

If it's an offline transaction then the merchant will still get paid and your bank will want the funds from you.

if your bank aren't willing to let you have an unauthorised overdraft then the card you get won't allow offline authorisations, as is the case with the recently issued blue Natwest visa debit cards.

Not necessarily, You are likely to go overdrawn some day this week. It can take up to 5 days. I've had it take 7 once. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

No need to apologise - it's better to know. However, if I pay £20 back in I can beat the overdraft maybe.....just assumed that as the store was quite a major chain it wouldn't take so long.

Thanks for your reply though. Firset time (but no doubt not the last time) that I have used this forum!

yes as long as you put the £20 back before the transaction hits your account you'll be fine.

Just for future reference, retailers have 6 years to claim any money from a bank account.

Actually under the card processor's rules they have up to 6 months to book the transaction after successfully obtaining authorisation, beyond that the only thing they can then do is chase you for the money - but if they can't get it together enough to book card transactions in a timely manner, it's doubtful they're going to be able to find you.
