Debit Card Payments

How long does it take on average for them to be taken out of your account? Skint until payday tomorrow, and need some petrol, but don't much fancy being charged for it.
Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.

the payment will take 3 working days to clear at least.
So if you bought the petrol right now, the transaction would be posted on Thursday.
cash withdrawals are immediate.0 -
Olipro are you sure about your answer? As my work colleague rang his bank (to ask this question last pay day) & they told him that it depends on the retailer & when they requeest the money. IE I paid for gym membership on my debit card on Sunday & it was showing against my available balance on MondayWins 2009 : Rimmel sexy curves mascara, Lipcote gift set. Joby is correct in saying that it depends on the retailer on when they claim the money. an example qvc took £15.45 on sunday it was back in my account today, it should be out again tomorrow. I have a meastro debit card which is an offline card i believe.0

actually you are indeed correct, it can take as little as 1 working day.0 -
OP, I reckon it will be made unavailable on your balance pretty much straight away....but shouldnt be debited until tomorrow.

Its a criminal offence to spend money ie (cheque) if you know that there are
insufficient funds in the account. so I'm toldmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
isn't that just in other countries? Its a criminal offence to spend money ie (cheque) if you know that there are
insufficient funds in the account. so I'm told
that doesnt relate to OP's question though, as a debit card payment would just take you into unauthorised overdraft. if OP gets paid on time tomorrow it should be okDebts at LBM (May '08) £5760 - Lloyds CC £4260, Lloyds OD £1500;Debts as of May 28th 2011:Santander CC: £0.00Lloyds OD : £0.00DFW Nerd #1247 - Proudly dealt with my Debts

Its a criminal offence to spend money ie (cheque) if you know that there are
insufficient funds in the account. so I'm told
in France that's true, in the UK the most it can mean is you violating the terms of your agreement with the bank... unless it can be proven that you deliberately allowed the cheque to bounce because your intention was to obtain goods by deception.
for cards this obviously doesn't apply however because the payment cannot bounce, it is either authorised successfully or not.0 -
Skidding a little off topic but...
A kid at my uni did a cheque book scam with his Student accounts. He kept requesting new cheque books claiming they were lost, stolen or didn't arrive until he amassed four cheque books per account. He then went around various "chequepoints" and used his £100 cheque guarantee card to cash them all with a 10% fee. He had something like 20 cheques per book I think. He did the whole lot.
Last time I heard about him he had moved to Europe but he certainly didn't settle his debts with those two big banking institutions. How can that not be a jail term!0 -
