I bought my grandaughter a new laptop at christmas and I downloaded the free windows security which was recommended on here. It has been great and we have had no problem with it, albeit she only uses it on the social networking sites and for homework. Her mother went on it last night and has downloaded all kinds of games and music to it. When my grandaugher has switched it on this morning it has come up saying it has 111 critical viruses and she says it wont let her do anything on it, I have asked if it will let her run the security scanner but she says no it wont let her do anything. Can anyone advise, I am so annoyed with her mum as she has done this before to my pc

Sounds like she has got one of those malware fake virus scanners like Internet Security 2010, which state that your computer is infested with viruses and locks it up until you pay them to clean it. What program is telling her that she has 111 critical viruses?poppy100

I will give her a ring and ask her, so am i going to have to pay to get them to unlock it??0

Hi sitcom
What was the free widows security that you downloaded, was it Microsoft Security Essentials?
Your Grandaughter has picked up one of the rogue security programmes which is easily done, most people panic when they see it and try and close it down the normal way and that's when you start to have problems.
Try downloading Malwarebytes (the latest version and make sure you update before running a scan)) from filehippo.com, if the rogue programmes won't allow a download try doing it through safe mode with networking.
If that fails and your GD has access to another computer download Superantispyware Portable to a USB memory stick and try it on the infected laptop.
Superantispyware Portable:

Malwarebytes: (make sure you download the latest version , it will say Download
Latest Version
5.64MB and update malwarebytes before scanning)

Yes it is Microsoft Security Essentials that we downloaded and its been great. I will have to wait till I get home from work and see what I can do with it. She is only 12 so I have told her just to shut it down till I get home.
I could be back here later when I get stuck:)0 -

Check to see if rogue programme is in Start up
Start/All Programs or Programs/Start Up
if there delete it.0
