Got a Nokia 6111 on O2 just called O2 to cancel the itemised billing used a non geographic number but they said they had no record of my number?

We finally worked out that OSPS is part of CPWH and my O2 contract is with CPWH and not O2 and that I now have to ring CPWH.

They said it was a complicated arrangement and did not explain any more.

Anyone know whats going on?

Thanks Tony

Your airtime contract will be with O2 not OSPS so they should be able to sort it. OSPS / CPW will just tell you to ring O2.

IIRC O2 contracts from CPW group are completely delt by CPW and not by O2, including cancellation of contract.

This is correct. If you purchase an O2 contract from OSPS you service provider is CPWS (Carphone Warehouse Services). They will be responsible for all billing and customer services enquiries.

  • Hi,

Just to clarify things...this arrangement is historically the result of the telecoms regulator forcing Vodafone and Cellnet (now O2) to separate NETWORK provision from SERVICE provision and being barred from offering service provison directly. This was in the 1990s, when Vodafone and Cellnet were the dominant networks and all the others were the new kids on the block. It was intended to encourage competition in the early years.

Basically, Cellnet & Vodafone were compelled to sell network capacity to the service providers who then packaged it up and sold it on to the consumers.

The abovementioned restrictions were lifted a number of years ago and O2 and Vodafone went about buying up their service providers to bring as much service provision back in-house as possible. However, there are a small band of independent O2/Vodafone service providers still around. Carphone Warehouse Services seems to be the only notable one in the consumer industry.

Until recently they also managed all Vodafone contracts purchased from CPW-owned companies themselves but they handed that business back to Vodafone in May of this year so now it's only O2 contracts that they manage themselves.

For the avoidance of doubt, with all other networks your service provision should be managed directly by the network, regardless of where you purchased your contract.

Confusing?...sure is! But there was a good reason for all this madness...

    Thanks all.

It is so confusing, when I called CPWH today they cancelled the itemised billing, I asked about the insurance and they put me through to lifeline, but they had no record and it turns out OSPS don't use the same insurance as CPWH.

The way these companies link together but do things differently is very confusing.
