Stupid quick question but I have not seen it discussed before.
For my tax for 2009-2010 do I include work completed up to and including 5th of April 2010 or work I have been paid for up to the 5th of April?
I was going to save my spreadsheet for 2009-2010 and then run another one for 2010-2011 just to make it easier for when the time comes to do my tax for this year.0 -
I got feedback for 4/5 jobs for Helion from ER. They were all graded 92%. I got 100% on everything except the final comment which was too brief. Seems there has been a huge misunderstanding somewhere about the word "brief".
I'm off to do some more Helions this morning, so I will write longer final comments and see if I get a better score on these.
As much as I hate the RE reports, where you have to write a ridiculous amount of characters to fill the box, I do think that perhaps the Helion reports should have a guideline of roughly how much they are expecting. To me if it says brief then they don't want an essay, just 2 or 3 lines, and some companies would mark you down for writing too much.
It's disheartening to follow a brief and then with no explanation be marked down for what you thought was correct.0 -

Because this is my first year I'm putting anything I worked up to 5th April in 09/10 because I know I'm not going to go over my NI small earnings limit. However if I do as much demo work this year as I've done in the past 6 months then I will only be able to earn around £2k from mystery shopping. So I'm trying to get as much out of 10/11 as I can so I don't have to think about it!
I think others go by when they're paid. I don't *think* there is a right or wrong way (at least I hope there isn't!).0 -

The only problem with declaring income that you haven't actually been paid yet is if you don't get paid! That is not completely unknown in thie business (mentioning no company names). When that happens, you have to adjust your accounts for the year gone or transfer the sum to the following year as a loss. Hence, I find it easier to have my financial ending in advance of the tax year end: I know that way that all the money was earned and received before I declare it.0 -
Basically you have 3 options:
1. Declare all income received & all expenses related to those jobs. Carry forward the income due & expenses related to those jobs to next year.
2. Declare all income received & expenses related to all jobs. Carry forward the income due to next year. This marginally reduces your bill this year as you are claiming expenses on income not yet received, but evens out in the end.
3. Declare all income received & due and offset all expenses. If you make a note of how you arrived at your totals (e.g. £3,250 income received, £350 income due for xxxx jobs = £3,600 income declared.). Next year do the same. If you were subsquently not paid any of the £350 then make an adjustment for this. E.g. £4,100 received, £500 due, -£30 for job xxxx from previous tax year = £4,570 to declare. There are technical terms for this, but it amounts to the same thing.
No. 3 is most accurate, but 2 is the easiest. The IR are happy as long as you are clear about what you are doing, keep good records & stick to the same method each year.A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Talking of grading I thought I would check up on my last BARE assignment. 8/10 - no comments other than ER. Same grader me thinks.0 -
Oh, one of my Helions just came through. Identical to what others have experienced. 100% for everything except the last point, same grader.0

Hi all,
I have done 3 jobs for Gapbuster, and I have not entered my IBAN number to get paid as I have no idea how to get it? Does anyone know how to go about finding out the IBAN number?
thanks0 -

Check your bank statements, thats the safest bet. There are online websites that you can put your account number and sort code into and they will give you them, but it's not 100% certain to be the right one.0
