    Hi Chimera

I've done this without the expense of a special kit - I bought packets of Aduki beans, sunflower & Lentils. I LOVED the Aduki sprouts, not so keen on the sunflower and haven't tried the lentils yet.

It's so easy - you just put the beans in a jar (I used a pasta sauce jar with about 2 dessert spoons of beans). Then you're supposed to put muslin over the top of jar but I cut a j-cloth type thing and held it in place with an elastic band. You then rinse the beans and drain a couple of times. Then cover the beans with water, replace the muslin or whatever cover you use and you can put the jar either in a cupboard or just leave it out (I think that effects the colour of the sprouts).

You drain the beans each day through the muslin, remove the muslin and cover with fresh water, replace the muslin, until the beans sprout which can take anything between about 4 - 8 days. Simples :D

Really dumb question, but where can you get the beans you need to sprout? A sandwich I love (and used to buy when I was still splashing the cash ;) ) had alfalfa sprouts in - so I'd love to get into sprouting. [even more so as we like stir frys etc, and the mr adores bean sprout type things!]

So, yes, what am I looking for and where? Thanks!

I got my first lot of seeds from Thompson & Morgan when I was ordering some other seeds but then I also found some at my local garden centre. Wilkinsons do a huge range of seeds right now so they may well have some. They're usually packaged as 'sprouting seeds'. Maybe you could also try health food stores, Holland & Barratt etc.

Suttons have some sprouting seeds in their ranges but they are cheaper to buy online if you want bigger quantities.

I am trying to sprout some mung beans at the moment in the glass pot from Gu chocolate souffl!!

I put them in on Sunday - put kitchen paper at the bottom, put the beans in, added a bit of water (barelly to cover the beans). I rinse them every day (morning and evening so far) now and this morning I noticed that they are starting to sprout!

We have just bought a pack of beans in Tesco's (0.5kg bag, I think), and I decided to give it a try... I keep buying the sprouted ones at Tesco's to put in stir fry, but this would be much more MSE if it works!

One thing I found is that home sprouted ones tend to have a stronger flavour than the supermarket stuff - but then isn't that always the way with homegrown stuff!

They are mung beans - small green beans.
